Junior Feby stuns veteran tennis star<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Junior tennis player Feby Widhiyanto turned
\nheads during the national selection tournament yesterday when he
\nbeat veteran Tjahyono in their Group D encounter.<\/p>\n
Playing on his favorite clay surface, Feby kept former
\nnational player Tjahyono running to score a come-from-behind 6-7
\n(7-9), 6-3, 6-4 win.<\/p>\n
Feby, 16, after one win and a loss, is now placed second in
\nthe group behind Andrian Raturandang. Davis Cup player Andrian,
\nas expected, maintained his unbeaten record yesterday with a 6-0,
\n6-2 drubbing of veteran Yustedjo Tarik.<\/p>\n
Andrian kicked off the tournament by overcoming a stubborn
\nFeby 7-5, 6-2 on Saturday. He now advances to the quarterfinals.<\/p>\n
Feby will make it through to the last eight round if he beats
\n1978 Asian Games champion Yustedjo, and Andrian downs Tjahyono in
\ntoday's final group matches.<\/p>\n
The Indonesian Tennis Association will select eight of the 16
\nplayers competing in the tournament to join its central training
\nprogram.<\/p>\n
The eight players are likely to make the Davis Cup team for
\nthe second play-off trip to Taiwan between Sept. 20 and Sept. 22.<\/p>\n
Tournament director Benny Mailili said he never thought Feby
\nwould hit the nation's elite players so fast.<\/p>\n
\"Feby is just a third stringer now and he is expected to get
\ninto the top eight in the next tournament in December,\" said
\nBenny, a tennis observer.<\/p>\n
Andrian was one of four leading players to cruise to the
\nquarterfinals.<\/p>\n
In Group A, former Davis Cup team member Bonit Wiryawan
\nsecured a quarterfinal berth after beating rookie Stanley Sanger
\n6-2, 6-2 for a second straight win.<\/p>\n
Indonesia's Southeast Asian Games backbone Sulistyo Wibowo
\nmanaged to beat Ade Guswin 6-1, 6-3 in a Group B match. Another
\nDavis Cup member, Sebastian da Costa, led Group C with a 2-0
\nrecord after beating Mulyadi 6-3, 6-3 yesterday.<\/p>\n
Benny Wijaya stole the show on Saturday when he made his first
\nappearance after receiving a second ban from playing in the
\nnational team last week. Benny refused an invitation to play in
\nthe selection tournament.<\/p>\n
\"Benny came to explain the personal problems that have caused
\nhim to decline our offer,\" said Wimar Witoelar, the tennis body's
