JAKARTA \u2013 The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) recorded that Indonesia\nexperienced deflation of 0.14 per cent month-to-month in July 2026.\nAteng Hartono, Deputy for Distribution and Services Statistics at BPS,\nsaid the decline in prices of several food commodities, particularly\nshallots and chillies, was the main factor holding back inflation at the\nstart of the second half of the year.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn July 2026 there was deflation of 0.14 per cent. On a monthly\nbasis, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) fell from 111.89 in June 2026 to\n111.73 in July 2026,\u201d Ateng said at a press conference at the BPS office\nin Jakarta on Monday (3\/8\/2026).<\/p>\n
Despite monthly deflation, Ateng said annual inflation remained\npositive. On a year-on-year basis, inflation stood at 2.88 per cent,\nwhilst calendar year inflation (year-to-date) was recorded at 1.65 per\ncent.<\/p>\n
According to Ateng, the food, beverages and tobacco group was the\nlargest contributor to the July 2026 deflation. This group experienced\ndeflation of 0.89 per cent, contributing 0.26 per cent to the overall\nfigure.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe commodities that dominantly drove deflation in this group were\nshallots, with a deflation contribution of 0.11 per cent. Red chillies\nand bird\u2019s eye chillies each contributed 0.06 per cent to deflation,\u201d\nAteng continued.<\/p>\n
In addition, eggs and tomatoes each contributed 0.03 per cent to\ndeflation, whilst oranges contributed 0.02 per cent. Ateng said the\ndecline in food commodity prices was the dominant factor suppressing\ninflation in July.<\/p>\n
BPS also recorded that the personal care and other services group\nexperienced deflation of 0.89 per cent, contributing 0.06 per cent to\noverall deflation. Ateng said the fall in gold jewellery prices was the\nmain cause.<\/p>\n
\u201cDeflation in the personal care and other services group was mainly\ndriven by deflation in gold jewellery of 3.58 per cent, contributing\n0.08 per cent to deflation,\u201d Ateng said.<\/p>\n
On the other hand, Ateng said the transport and education groups\nrestrained the pace of deflation. The transport group experienced\ninflation of 0.52 per cent, contributing 0.06 per cent to inflation.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe commodity that dominantly drove inflation in the transport group\nwas mainly petrol, with an inflation contribution of 0.08 per cent,\u201d\nAteng said.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the education group experienced inflation of 0.55 per\ncent, with an inflation contribution of 0.03 per cent. Ateng explained\nthat rising education costs coinciding with the start of the new\nacademic year were the main factor.<\/p>\n
