Judging Indonesians<\/p>\n
I am writing this with regard to a letter by Mark Potts,
\nIgnoring American aid, that appeared on Jan. 13 in The Jakarta
\nPost.<\/p>\n
I would like to tell Potts that he is wrong in judging us
\nIndonesians by taking the stereotypical view that we can only
\ntake things from his country for granted.<\/p>\n
On Jan. 13, three leading local Indonesian newspapers (Kompas,
\nMedia Indonesia, Koran Tempo) featured photographs and articles
\nabout U.S. and Australian troops helping the tsunami victims in
\nAceh and North Sumatra. This fact was obviously overlooked by you
\nand proves your statement wrong.<\/p>\n
Furthermore, I would like to say that if you personally do not
\nunderstand our country's behavior, then you cannot judge it as
\nbeing "wrong". You can only judge when you have full
\nunderstanding of a matter.<\/p>\n
Please also note that extending help, if sincere, is not about
\nself-glorification or expecting acknowledgement, as you implied
\nin your letter when you stated "would you have been very happy to
\nsend all aid to Sri Lanka and Thailand".<\/p>\n
Do we help a dying victim of a traffic accident only after
\nfirst checking, analyzing and judging his life history?<\/p>\n
