JAKARTA: Indonesian Police Watch has called for the Corruption
\nEradication Commission (KPK) to take over the investigation into
\nformer National Police chief Gen. Da'i Bachtiar and former
\ndetectives chief Comr. Gen. Erwin Mappaseng in connection with a
\nbribery case linked to state bank BNI.<\/p>\n
\"The findings of two top police officers' involvement in a
\nbribery case have tainted the (image of) the police force,
\ntherefore this must be addressed accordingly. The National Police
\nhas so far discriminated in favor of top officers in upholding
\nthe law; they tend to cover such cases up,\" Police Watch said in
\na statement.<\/p>\n
An investigation by an outside party was needed to stop the
\npolice's top ranks from escaping justice, it said.<\/p>\n
Snail-paced probes into suspicious bank accounts belonging to
\n15 officers were more proof officers were not answerable to the
\nlaw.<\/p>\n
\"Judging from the police's culture, which prevents the force
\nfrom addressing their own problems, intervention from outside

Govt to give cash to
\nAceh flood victims<\/p>\n
KUTACANE, Southeast Aceh: The government will provide Rp 4
\nmillion (about US$400) in cash for each family affected by the
\nflash flood in Southeast Aceh regency, Aceh, Minister of Social
\nServices Bachtiar Chamsyah said on Saturday.<\/p>\n
Bachtiar said the government was now assessing the condition
\nof houses and buildings in the area to seek ways on how to help
\nin the reconstruction work.<\/p>\n
The flood, which occurred on Tuesday, killed 22 people, and is
\nseen as the worst this year in terms of fatalities after April's
\nflash floods in the same regency, which killed 15 people.<\/p>\n
Speaking after visiting the affected area, Bachtiar said that
\nwhat was urgent now was how to help the refugees, as over 1,700
