Over Rp 400,000 (US$141.5) was raised for charity early this
\nweek as seven celebrities sold autographed white ponchos bearing
\ntheir distinctly unique brand of amateur artwork at the Atrium of
\nPlaza Indonesia.<\/p>\n
Famous names such as singer Ikang Fawzi, avant-guard musician
\nHarry Roesli and business-woman Dewi Motik Pramono painted the
\nponchos with curious designs and then labeled them with such
\nunusual names as \"Anything you believe in\" and \"Aids.\"<\/p>\n
The seven ponchos were then auctioned to the public with the
\nproceeds going to the Krida Bakti foundation to finance harelip
\noperations for the needy.<\/p>\n
The highest bids went to film director Arifin C. Noer's paltry
\nsketch of a flower and designer Robby Tumewu's crisscross art
\ndrawing, each selling for Rp 100,000 ($46.51).<\/p>\n
It was unclear whether the buyers bid on such \"plain\" artwork
\nout of pure altruism or because they thought the price included
\nthe lovely models donning the exotic ponchos. (mds)<\/p>\n

Cindy Crawford, the supermodel from the United States, will
\nattend the grand finale of the 1994 Indonesian model
\nchampionships slated for June 2 at Sahid Jaya hotel.<\/p>\n
The organizing committee has selected 20 finalists from
\napproximately 2,000 participants from across the country.<\/p>\n
Suara Pembaruan, an afternoon daily, reported that the contest
\nis aimed at meeting the needs of Indonesian advertising companies
\nand production houses for professional models.<\/p>\n
The contest is sponsored by Putri Pertiwi, a modeling agency,
\nRajawali Citra Televisi Indonesia (RCTI), and Indonesian
\nAdvertising Company Association (PPPI).(03)<\/p>\n
Councilor supports
\nhigher parking fees<\/p>\n
A councilor proposed that the administration increase the
\nhourly parking fees instead of imposing higher fees for the first
\ntwo hours only.<\/p>\n
Helmy A.R. Syihab from the City Council's Commission B on
\nfinance said the proposed policy would discourage private car
\nowners from using their vehicles, and thus reduce traffic
\ncongestion.<\/p>\n
\"Private car users will feel burdened by such high fees,\" he
\nexplained.<\/p>\n
Helmy's proposal came following reports of the
\nadministration's plan to increase parking fees.<\/p>\n
He also suggested that the city's parking authority issue
\nmonthly parking tickets which will reduce the amount of cash
\ncirculating among parking attendants and minimize the possibility
\nof embezzlements in parking fee management.<\/p>\n
According to his proposal, the tickets -- whose colors change
\nevery month -- should be available at every gas station, the
\nSuara Pembaruan afternoon daily reported on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
He also said that the city administration should support the
\ninvolvement of the private sector in building parking facilities
\nas they contribute to city's income.<\/p>\n
However, he urged the administration to standardize the
\nparking fees at some private parking places. According to Helmy,
\nthere is a commercial center which does not charge any parking
\nfees for its clients and is therefore not obliged to contribute
\nto the city's income.<\/p>\n
Parking fees at commercial centers vary from Rp300 to Rp500
\nfor the first two hours, but the Pondok Indah Mall, a shopping
\nmall in South Jakarta, offers free parking to its shoppers.<\/p>\n
The councilor also criticized the city's Traffic and
\nTransportation Control Agency which he said has not taken action
\nagainst people who park their vehicles on the roadside.(03)<\/p>",
