Big players in textile world join Jakarta Expo<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Big players in the world's textile and fashion
\nindustries will take part in Asia Global Sourcing (AGS), an
\ninternational textile and apparel exhibition and conference,
\nwhich will be held at the Jakarta Convention Center next month.<\/p>\n
The show, scheduled for 25 - 27 October, will comprise a
\nbuyers program, a conference and exhibition of the industry. It
\nwill bring together some of the world's leading garment buyers to
\nmeet directly with Indonesian textile manufacturers.<\/p>\n
Ministers and senior officials from seven countries, including
\nIndia, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, the Philippines, Cambodia
\nand Indonesia have confirmed they will speak at the conference
\nwhere players in the industry will discuss issues and solutions
\nrelated to problems in the region's textile industry.<\/p>\n
Confirmed speakers include HE Shri Kashiram Rana, Minister of
\nTextiles, New Delhi, India; HE Cham Prasidh, Minister of
\nCommerce, Cambodia; HE Mahiepela Herath, Minister of Rural
\nIndustrial Development, Sri Langka; Dr. Nguyen Xuan Chuan, Vice
\nMinister in charge of External Economy, Hanoi, Vietnam; Rodolfo
\nSeverino, Secretary General of ASEAN; Thomas
\nG.Aquino, Under Secretary for Trade Group, Department of Trade
\nand Industry, Philippines; Gusmardi Bustami, National Agency for
\nExport Development, Jakarta, Indonesia.<\/p>\n
Also visiting will be industry groups from ASEAN, the EU and
\nChina.<\/p>\n
Indonesia's major players such as Texmaco, Indorama, Trisula,
\nAPAC, Eratex, Ungaran Sari Garment and other big companies from
\nChina and India have confirmed their participation.<\/p>\n
International buyers from groups such as C+A, Tesco, K-Mart,
\nMetro MGE, Woolworths, Top Shop, Zara, Joe Bloggs, Donna Karan,
\nJeff Banks, All Saints, Katherine Hamnett, Miss Selfridge,
\nWareHouse, Principles, Wallis, J.C. Penny's, Hennes & Mauritz and
\nPlaytex have also confirmed to take part. Many more are expected
\nto attend the event.<\/p>\n
A team of independent international management and marketing
\nexperts and the organizers, PT Rantai Expo Internasional and ITE
\nGroup Plc of London, have organized the three-day event, which
\nfocuses on the creativity and dynamism of Asia's textile and
\napparel industries.<\/p>\n
Chairman of the Indonesian Textile Association Benny Soetrisno
\nsaid that the event, one of the largest business gatherings held
\nin Indonesia since the financial crisis hit the country in late
\n1997, would be dedicated to the textile and apparel industries of
\nAsia.<\/p>\n
\"It also aims to establish itself as a focal point where
\nvarious Asian garment manufacturers, textile
\nand accessory brands will be presented to European and American
\nbuyers,\" he said.<\/p>\n
While the exhibition will be promoting the region's dynamic
\nindustries, the conference will focus on all major issues related
\nto the liberalization of the world textile trade and the third
\nphase of reintegration of the textile trade within WTO rules.<\/p>\n
About 75 percent of the world's apparel production, worth more
\nthan $135 billion per annum, is imported by the U.S., Europe and
\nJapan. However, last year's apparel exports from Asia showed
\nonly a 5 percent growth compared with a 23 percent growth in
\nSouth American exports. Asia's decreasing share of exports to the
\nkey international markets is a threat to Asia's textile and
\ngarment industry sector as a whole.<\/p>\n
\"The crucial issue for our sourcing activities in Asia is
\nalways lead time. The complicated triangular
\ntransactions between the supplies of fabrics and accessories to
\ngarment processing currently takes far too much time. AGS 2001
\nwill certainly assist us in shortening our speed-to-market,\" said
\nBonnie Young, Senior Creative Director and Director of Global
\nSourcing, Donna Karan International.<\/p>\n
The ambassadors of China and India are also scheduled to take
\npart in a dinner celebrating the Trade Winds movement - bilateral
\ntrade relations established between China and Indonesia and
\nbetween India and Indonesia. Minister of Trade and Industry, Rini
\nSoewandi, is expected to represent Indonesia at the dinner,
\nduring which the AGS 2001 welcoming committee will pass the AGS
\nbaton to Beijing, as the host of AGS 2002.<\/p>\n
Being the first and the only event fully dedicated to the
\nfashion industry of textiles and apparel in Asia, AGS will open
\nits doors to the public every day between 13.00 pm and 20.00 pm.<\/p>\n
About 250 local and foreign journalists have been invited to
\ncover the event. Drapers Record of UK, Fashion of Italy,
\nGermany's TextilWirtschaft, France's Journal du Textil, HK's
