        "content": "<p>JP\/8\/g-arrest<\/p>\n<p>Suspicious man arrested at council<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA: A 40-year-old man claiming to be an eviction victim <br>\nand hoping to lodge a complaint at the City Council, was arrested <br>\nby a security guard as he attempted to force his way into the <br>\ncouncil compound.<\/p>\n<p>City Council Security Chief Mauladi said Derman Purba was <br>\narrested because he ignored the warnings from several security <br>\npersonnel not to drive into the compound with his kijang van.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;He even shouted profanity at us while driving in,&quot; Mauladi <br>\nsaid, adding that Derman also ignored the order to stop when he <br>\nreached the City Council basement.<\/p>\n<p>Derman was taken to the Gambir police subprecinct for <br>\nquestioning, a half kilometer away from City Council building on <br>\nJl. Kebon Sirih, Central Jakarta.<\/p>\n<p>His identity card said he was residing in Palmerah, West <br>\nJakarta and working as a journalist.<\/p>\n<p>Derman said he ignored the warnings because he wanted to meet <br>\na councillor to convey his personal opposition to the recent <br>\neviction of poor people in Tanjung Duren, West Jakarta.  --JP<\/p>\n<p>Sutiyoso hopeful on Bantar Gebang<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA: Governor Sutiyoso expressed his optimism that he <br>\nwould be able to successfully negotiate with the Bekasi municipal <br>\nadministration for the planned extension of the Bantar Gebang <br>\ngarbage dump contract, despite increasing calls from several <br>\nBekasi councillors to terminate the contract.<\/p>\n<p>Sutiyoso said he had several times held talks with the Bekasi <br>\nmayor to discuss various issues, including the dump, to forge <br>\ncooperation.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;I don&apos;t believe Bekasi will end the contract since the <br>\nadministration does not have strong reasons to do it. We even <br>\nplan to expand our cooperation on how to make use of the <br>\ngarbage,&quot; he said.<\/p>\n<p>A number of Bekasi councillors called on the mayor on Tuesday <br>\nnot to extend the contract because of the deteriorating <br>\nenvironment in the area. Jakarta dumps around 6,000 tons of <br>\ngarbage there each day.<\/p>\n<p>Jakarta experienced a garbage crisis in late 2001 when the <br>\nBekasi administration closed the dump because of environmental <br>\nconcerns. -- JP<\/p>",
