It is really regrettable that Indonesia, a country endowed
\nwith rich natural resources, is in crisis in practically all
\naspects of national life, as shown by the country's weak human
\nresources and poor economic condition.<\/p>\n
Unfortunately, the government, in its attempt to lift the
\ncountry out of this multidimensional crisis, relies on policies
\nthat do not side with the little people. For example, the
\ngovernment's decision to raise fuel prices and telephone and
\nelectricity rates. Instead, the government's policies tend to
\ndefend the interests of business tycoons.<\/p>\n
Another example of how the government fails to take into
\naccount the interests of the little people is that the interest
\nrate on Bank Indonesia's promissory notes is kept at over 17
\npercent annually, so that many banks prefer to buy these
\npromissory notes rather than channeling their funds to the
\npublic. As a result many small businesses are cash-strapped and
\nhave gone bankrupt.<\/p>\n
The government must always remember that in its attempts to
\nimprove the country's economic condition, it must issue and
\nimplement policies that will revive the small-scale businesses of
\nthe little people.<\/p>\n
