Jakartans show a good sense of togetherness: Nataatmadja<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Although Jakarta is often labeled a city of
\nindividuals, its residents, in fact, show a good sense of
\ntogetherness and actively participate in developing the city.<\/p>\n
\"Jakartans are often thought of as islands. Direct field
\nobservations, however, show that they are not like that,\"
\nSoedradjat Nataatmadja, the inspector general of the Ministry of
\nHome Affairs, said over the weekend.<\/p>\n
Soedradjat, who heads the selection team for the winner of
\nParasamya Purnakarya Nugraha award, given every five years to the
\nbest province, made the remark yesterday at the City Hall while
\nrendering the team's final evaluation on Jakarta. Jakarta, though
\na city, is also a province.<\/p>\n
To illustrate his argument, Soedradjat praised the \"Plant One
\nMillion Trees Movement\" initiated last year by Governor Surjadi
\nSoedirdja which has succeeded in motivating the city's community
\nto donate 70 percent of the targeted number of trees.<\/p>\n
\"It is proof that amid the individualistic lifestyle of a
\nmetropolis like Jakarta, the community still has a good sense of
\nbelonging to the city and the spirit of participating for a
\ncommon purpose,\" Soedradjat said.<\/p>\n
This \"plus\" point can increase Jakarta's chance of winning the
\naward, Soedradjat said, adding that from direct field
\nobservations, it can be concluded that the city administration is
\nready to snatch the prize.<\/p>\n
In response to Soedradjat's praise, Governor Surjadi Soedirdja
\nsaid that the increasing care of Jakartans towards the city's
\nprograms was achieved through his official visits to the city's
\nsubdistricts every Friday and Sunday.<\/p>\n
However, Soedradjat said that the current services of the city
\nadministration to the public still need improvement.<\/p>\n
\"As servants to the public, city administration officials
\nshould not place themselves as rulers,\" Soedradjat said, \"they
\nshould put themselves in the place of the public which is in need
\nof their services.\"<\/p>\n
Another plus point, according to Soedradjat, is the city's
\npopulation management.<\/p>\n
Managing a diversified, multi-ethnic population is not an easy
\ntask, but according to the team's evaluation, Jakarta is doing a
\ngood job, he said.<\/p>\n
Soedradjat also praised the City Council which, according to
\nhim, responds to the demands of the public.<\/p>\n
While saying that Jakarta has a good chance of winning the
\naward, Soedradjat said, the other nine competitors' are equal
\nlikely winners.<\/p>\n
Soedradjat acknowledged that the present evaluation system
\nseems to limit the chances of younger, less developed provinces
\n-- such as Irian Jaya and East Timor -- while on the other hand,
\nprovinces which have won the award -- such as West, Central and
\nEast Java -- are still allowed to take part in the competition.<\/p>\n
Hence, his team will make a proposal to the Ministry of Home
\nAffairs to improve the 14 selection system which has been
\nadopted for 14 years, Soedradjat said. (06)<\/p>",
