Clamor from KADIN chairman<\/p>\n
Chairman of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry
\n(KADIN) Aburizal Bakrie called on the Annual Session of the
\nPeople's Consultative Assembly (MPR) to discuss economic
\nrecovery.<\/p>\n
Among the Asian nations hit by the economic crisis, Indonesia
\nis the only one that has yet to recover. Malaysia, South Korea
\nand Thailand recovered early.<\/p>\n
How did they do it? Because they were able to solve their
\npolitical problems. Malaysia took a clear political stance,
\nnamely that it did not need the IMF -- a political and economic
\ndecision that determined its subsequent path.
\nOne of the key points of South Korea's success was its guts to
\nmake a political decision against its corrupt leaders.<\/p>\n
Thailand, which has a strong king, meanwhile had the guts to
\nend constitutional crisis by setting up a constitutional drafting
\nassembly which was tasked to make amendments to its radical
\nconstitution.<\/p>\n
It is clear that economic recovery is strongly related to
\npolitics. Hence, the core of the problem of Indonesia's economic
\ncrisis is related to the political structure and system.<\/p>\n
The KADIN chairman was right to issue his statement.
\nIndonesia's economy can only recover from the crisis if the
\ncountry's political affairs are handled properly, by having a
\nstrong and courageous president elected directly and not as a
