The government needs some Rp 1.7 trillion (US$795 million) to
\nget rid the capital city from flood, says an official of the
\nDirectorate General of Irrigation.<\/p>\n
Satrio Untung, head of the project for the dredging of
\nCiliwung and Cisadane rivers, said here Thursday that the huge
\nbudget is required to fiance land acquisition in the 18 hectare
\nareas, which are affected by flood throughout the year.<\/p>\n
\"The huge amount of money is needed due to the soaring prices
\nof land for land acquisition,\" Satrio told reporters during a
\nvisit to four dams in the city.<\/p>\n
For example, he explained, the government spent Rp 100 billion
\n($46million) for the acquisition of a six-kilometer area in North

\nBendungan Hilir<\/p>\n
The municipal administration is now constructing a low-cost
\napartments for Bendungan Hilir, Central Jakarta, residents.<\/p>\n
Central Jakarta mayor Abdul Kahfi said on Wednesday that the
\nadministration the 296 unit apartment building in the 8,600-
\nsquare-meter plot in Bendungan Hilir, of which some 70 will be
\nused to house former area residents whose houses were razed by

PT Coca Cola Indonesia, a subsidiary of the giant American
\nsoft drink company, is sponsoring a program to circumcise 50
\nsmall boys from the poor families in West Jakarta.<\/p>\n
The circumcision was held at the company's factory on Jl. Daan

Austrian tried for
\nusing stolen card<\/p>\n
Klaus Mart, 25, an Austrian national, is on trial at the West
\nJakarta district court for using a stolen credit card originally
\nissued by issued by PT Adipura Sumber Sedaya Finance.<\/p>\n
Prosecutor Villa Darmawi told the court on Wednesday that
\nKlaus along with his friends, Bambang, Santo and Budi, used the
\nSilver Card belonging to Agustina Gunarsin at a department store
\nat Citra Land shopping center in Grogol, West Jakarta, on Dec.
\n31, 1993.<\/p>\n
Klaus, according to the prosecutor, selected the items they
\nwanted to buy and forged the signature of the original owner,
\nwhile the three other accomplices collected the goods worth a
\ntotal of Rp 2.5 million.<\/p>\n
The defendant and Budi were captured by security guards who
\nhad been informed by the cashiers the credit card was dubious.
\nTheir accomplices left as soon as they knew of the imminent

Student killed
\nby brawlers<\/p>\n
Ferry Maulana, 18, a senior highschool student, was stabbed to
\ndeath by two students a technical senior highschool in Cideng
\nRaya, Central Jakarta.<\/p>\n
The victim was stabbed in the stomach by the two students
\nwhose identities were withheld by police as he watched a brawl
\nbetween students from his school and another area school on

Jakarta to host
\nvolleyball game<\/p>\n
Jakarta will host \"the First Jakarta Cup Sister Cities
\nVolleyball Tournament\" to be from June 16 to 22, Robert P.
\nSilalahi, the head of the intercity and interprovincial
\ncooperation bureau, said yesterday.<\/p>\n
Participants of the tournament are scheduled to come from
\neight Jakarta's sister cities, including volley ball players from
\nTokyo, Seoul, Berlin, Casablanca, Los Angeles, New South Wales,
\nArkansas and Amsterdam.<\/p>\n
According to Silalahi, the tournament is linked to the 467th
\nbirthday of Jakarta and will be staged at Istora Senayan, the
\nnational sport complex.<\/p>\n
Participants will be divided into two pools determined by the
\nresult of lots to be drawn in the third week of April. The

New film series
\non Betawi people<\/p>\n
Karnos Film, a local film producer, will make another 26
\nepisodes of the popular television series Si Doel Anak Sekolahan
\nin response to the public's positive favor given to the previous
\nepisodes.<\/p>\n
\"I am thankful to the public for their warm welcome to the
\nprevious six episodes and for their help for the production of
\nthe next episodes,\" Rano Karno, the producer and director of the
\nseries, said on Thursday.<\/p>\n
\"I will guarantee these new series will not be boring,\" Rano
\npromised during a ceremony marking the beginning of renewed
\nproduction at a housing complex in South Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Rano said the shows will be aired on private television
\nstations starting next September.<\/p>\n
The production of the first phase, which will consist of 13
\nepisodes, is expected to be completed next July, while the
\nsecond phase will be finished in December.<\/p>\n
Rano Karno, 34, added that the extended series will still use
\nthe concept of the initial series for which the Betawi (native
\npeople of Jakarta) dialect and culture served as the main theme.<\/p>\n
The first six shows of the series, which were aired on the
\nprivate TV station RCTI during the prime time, from 7:30 p.m. to
\n8:30 p.m. every Sunday in January and February, featured Rano
\nKarno, Benyamin Suaeb, Suti Karno, Aminah Cendrakasih, Mandra,
\nCornelia Agatha and Adem.<\/p>\n
The previous storyline featured the everyday life of a
\nuniversity student named Doel, a native of Jakarta, portrayed by
\nRano Karno.<\/p>\n
Rano said that the new series, which will cost between Rp 40
\nmillion to Rp 50 million per episode, will present several guest
