TMII to present
\nLampung arts<\/p>\n
The Lampung Province pavilion at the Beautiful Indonesia in
\nMiniature Park (TMII) in East Jakarta will present in June a live
\ndemonstration of a traditional elopement, the project leader of
\nLampung's art office, Sanusi Asyma, announced on Saturday.<\/p>\n
Every year TMII presents a series of special packages
\nfeaturing traditional ceremonies from the country's 27 provinces.
\nThis year, it is the turn of Lampung province to perform, Sanusi
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
The tradition, called sebambangan, involves eloping couples
\nand some close relatives.<\/p>\n
Upon abducting the bride, the groom is required by tradition
\nto leave tenepik, a sum of money, and a letter of apology to her
\nparents for taking away their daughter without consent.<\/p>\n
The family of the bride is then reconciled with the family of
\nthe groom, during a ritual in which the tribal head of the man's
\nfamily is required to submit the clan's apologies to the tribal
\nhead of the girl's family and to present him a kris, or spear and
\na sum of money as a bride price and a sign of remorse.<\/p>\n
The couple then goes to the bride's parents to pay homage and
\nthe wedding banquet is finally held at the house of the
\nbridegroom. (06)<\/p>\n
Crystal exhibition
\nat Enteos Club<\/p>\n
The Enteos Bankers and Industrialists Social Club will hold an
\nexhibition of crystal artworks from April 27 to May 11 at the
\nBank Rakyat Indonesia (BRI) Tower on Jl. Jend. Sudirman, the
\nclub's director, Ghafur Fadyl, announced over the weekend.<\/p>\n
The exhibition, entitled The Fantasy of Italian Masters'
\nCreation, will display more than 150 pieces of gold-blended and
\ncolored crystal works of two noted Italian masters, A. Zanelli
\nand Mario Badioli.<\/p>\n
The pieces include 12 animal sculptures, featuring the images
\nof the Chinese zodiac.<\/p>\n
According to Ghafur, prices for objects in the show range from
\nRp 500,000 (US$232) to Rp 40 million (US$18,600).<\/p>\n
Coordinating Minister of Security and Political Affairs
\nSoesilo Soedarman, who is a member of the club's board of
\ngovernors, will act as the host of the exhibition. (06)<\/p>\n
New tabloid
\nfor Teenagers<\/p>\n
A new tabloid for teenagers, Karina, will enter the market at
\nthe beginning of next month, the tabloid's adviser, Lukman Umar
\nannounced over the weekend.<\/p>\n
The 32-page tabloid, which used to be a supplement of the
\nKartini women's magazine, will cost Rp 1,000 (48 US cents) each.<\/p>\n
The first edition will total 150,000 papers.<\/p>\n
Lukman said that for the first three months, the publication
\nwill still be in its trial period, while its real launching is
\nscheduled to take place on Aug. 17.<\/p>\n
\"I hope it will reach a break-even point in a year,\" Lukman,
\nwho is also publisher of Kartini magazine, said, adding that he
\nhad bought a special printing machine for this tabloid.<\/p>\n
Lukman said the publisher will also set up a youth creativity
\nfoundation to assist potential elementary school graduates whose
\nparents cannot afford their schooling.<\/p>\n
The publisher will put aside Rp 50 of the price of every
\ntabloid sold, to be donated to the foundation.<\/p>\n
The tabloid's editor-in-chief Syarifuddin, its general manager
\nFachruddin Yahya and managing editor Herna Soe were present
\nduring the announcement of its publication. (06)<\/p>\n
11-year-old servant
\nbeaten by employer<\/p>\n
While the case of Sugirah, a house maid allegedly disabled by
\nher boss, is still dangling, another servant, Sumiyati, is
\nreported to have received similar treatment from her boss, a Mrs.
\nAing, in Wijaya Kusuma district, West Jakarta.<\/p>\n
\"Since I worked there in August 1993, I have been continually
\nbeaten by Mrs. Aing. I wanted to scream because of the pain, but
\nshe threatened me not to. She said she was fed up with me and if
\nI dare to cry out, she would beat me even more,\" Sumiyati was
\nquoted by the Bisnis Indonesia daily newspaper as saying on
\nSaturday.<\/p>\n
Because of the physical abuse, the 11-year old girl from
\nCianjur, West Java, bears bruises on several parts of her body
\nand some scars on her face.<\/p>\n
Her employer's neighbors said they did not realize the servant
\nwas being mistreated because she was never allowed to leave the
\nhouse.<\/p>\n
When Sumiyati was finally sent out, to buy flowers, the flower
\nseller noticed that her face was swollen and asked her what had
\nhappened.<\/p>\n
Sumyiati began to weep and told the florist everything that
\nher boss had done to her.<\/p>\n
The flower seller then took Sumiyati to officials at the
\nWijaya Kusuma district office. From here Sumiyati was sent to
\nTanjung Duren police office for further questioning.<\/p>\n
The police then went to the employer's house with Sumiyati
\nonly to find that Mrs. Aing was not at home.<\/p>\n
The police took the broken handle of broom and a broken glass
\nwhich the maid said were used by Mrs. Aing to punish her. (06)<\/p>",
