Ensuring a safe return home to celebrate religious holidays is
\nno longer limited to the prevention of traffic accidents; snipers
\nand bomb squads from the Police Mobile Brigade will also guard
\nagainst more sinister possibilities.<\/p>\n
They are among at least 3,600 police personnel to be deployed
\nduring the Idul Fitri exodus traffic along the north coast area
\nof West Java, 10 days prior to the celebrations due to fall on
\nNov. 25-26.<\/p>\n
They will also safeguard several vital spots along the north
\ncoast from possible terrorist attacks or armed robberies during
\nthe celebrations. Police have also warned against terrorist
\nsuspects on the run.<\/p>\n
Cirebon Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Sunaryono said the
\nsecurity operations called Operasi Ketupat Lodaya 2003 were under
\nsupervision of the West Java police headquarters.<\/p>\n
The security personnel will be assigned to guard the exodus
\nrush from the Sukra subdistrict in Indramayu regency to the
\nLosari subdistrict in Cirebon regency.<\/p>\n
Security personnel will also be posted on a number of
\nalternative routes in Majalengka, Kuningan, Indramayu, Cirebon
\nregencies and Cirebon municipality.<\/p>\n
Snipers will be placed in strategic places to deter any crimes
\nduring the exodus.<\/p>\n
"They will be on alert 24-hours-a-day along the north coast
\nhighway equipped with vehicles of high agility, which can slip
\nthrough crammed traffic and rapidly overcome criminal
\nactivities," Sunaryono said. He would not say the number of
\nsnipers that would be deployed.<\/p>\n
Several areas of high economic value will be guarded by the
\nsnipers, including the Balongan oil refinery, the Pertamina
\nTreatment Unit VI in Indramayu regency, Western Java Upstream
\nOperation Area of Pertamina, PT BAT (British American Tobacco)
\nand PT Gas Indonesia in Cirebon mayoralty. They will also guard
\nPT Indocement Tunggak Perkasa in Palimanan, Cirebon regency.<\/p>\n
The operation will also be backed by elite troops from the
\nWest Java Mobile Brigade of Battalion C.<\/p>\n
"The oil refinery in Balongan supplies fuel for Jakarta and
\nWest Java. We regard it as a very vital installation," he said.<\/p>\n
The crime-prone spots to be manned by snipers are the areas
\naround the Subang-Indramayu regency borders, the Patrol area,
\nKarangampel-Krangkeng highway in Indramayu regency and several
\nother places in Cirebon, Majalengka, Cilimus and Kuningan
\nregencies.<\/p>\n
Antara also reported that Cirebon's health agency would deploy
\nat least 200 medical assistants and paramedics at 29 health posts
\nalong the north coast highway and alternative routes. Dadang
\nPrihadi, the head of the agency said they would be on duty around
\nthe clock.<\/p>\n
"Every post will be manned by six health workers who will
\ntake turns in three shifts. So there will be two persons on duty
\nin one shift ready at the public health center near the posts,"
\nhe said. The main post at the health office would monitor every
\npost, he added.<\/p>\n
In anticipation of traffic accidents in remote areas, two
\nambulances from the traveling public health centers would be
\ndeployed.<\/p>\n
In Semarang on Friday Central Java Police Chief Insp.Gen. Didi
\nWidayadi of Semarang, said any civilian party wanting to set up
\ncoordinating posts during the holiday season must collaborate
\nwith the police. "There will not be any posko (posts) belonging
\nto one political party or organization," he said in reference to
\nthe tendency of setting up posts to help travelers.<\/p>",
