JAMBI, Jambi: Copies of the Koran carrying a photograph of
\ngubernatorial candidate Zulkifli Nurdin have been circulating in
\nJambi over the past few days, sparking controversy ahead of the
\ngubernatorial election on June 26.<\/p>\n
Sulaiman Abdullah, the head of the Jambi branch of the
\nIndonesian Ulema Council, criticized the circulation of the
\nKorans, calling it an example of religion being abused for
\npolitical purposes.<\/p>\n
Sulaiman said his organization was seeking avenues to resolve
\nthe controversy.<\/p>\n
Bahrul Rozali, the head of the Al Arafah Foundation, which
\nhelped circulate the Korans, denied politics played any part in
\nthe foundation's actions.<\/p>\n
\"There is no political motive. We saw that Muslim students
\nneeded more Korans and we printed them,\" said Bahrul, while
\nacknowledging that some of the printing costs were paid for by
\nZulkifli.<\/p>\n
A similar controversy occurred in Indramayu regency recently,
\nwhen the Indramayu regent put his picture on the inside front
\ncover of Korans and distributed them as part of his campaign

\nprotest fees<\/p>\n
YOGYAKARTA: In conjunction with National Awakening Day on May 20,
\nhundreds of Gadjah Mada University (UGM) students demonstrated
\nhere on Friday to demand the revocation of the university's
\nstatus as an autonomous state body.<\/p>\n
Since the university was made an autonomous state body four
\nyears ago, tuition has skyrocketed and numerous illegal fees have
\nbeen imposed on students, the demonstrators said.<\/p>\n
As the cost of an education at the university has gone up, the
\nquality of teaching has remained the same, said the chairman of
\nthe UGM Student Executive Body, Romy Ardiansyah.<\/p>\n
As an autonomous state body, the university no longer is
\nsubsidized by the central government and must provide 100 percent
\nof its own funding. UGM, the oldest university in the country,

Chinese boats
\nseized in Maluku<\/p>\n
AMBON, Maluku: A senior naval officer announced on Friday the
\nNavy had seized two fishing boats from China and an Indonesian
\nboat carrying illegal logs in the waters of Maluku.<\/p>\n
The ships were seized on Sunday and Wednesday near Arafura
\nafter it was found they did not have the necessary documents,
\nsaid the chief of the naval base in Ambon, First Adm. Bambang
\nSupeno.<\/p>\n
Dozens of crew members, most Chinese nationals, are being held
\nat the base for legal processing, Bambang said.<\/p>\n
Since January, the Navy has seized some 50 boats carrying
\nillegal logs or fishing illegally in the waters of Maluku.<\/p>\n
Bambang said crew members from about 30 of the seized boats

Human error behind
\nLampung train crash<\/p>\n
BANDUNG: A train accident in Bandarlampung on Thursday night that
\nkilled six people was caused by human error, a spokesman for
\nstate train operator PT KAI said on Friday.<\/p>\n
Noor Hamidi said a PT KAI employee at the Rejosari station
\nshould have prevented the Fajar Utama Express passenger train
\nfrom departing the station. A few moments after it was allowed to
\ndepart, the passenger train slammed into a freight train carrying
\ncoal, leaving at least six people dead and dozens of others
