        "content": "<p>JP\/5\/DEBATE<\/p>\n<p>Yogyakarta dominates &apos;pesantren&apos; debate contest<\/p>\n<p>Yuli Tri Suwarni<br>\nThe Jakarta Post\/Bogor<\/p>\n<p>Yogyakarta participants dominated a debate competition held on <br>\nFriday at the Jaya Raya resort outside Bogor, placing six groups <br>\nin the final eight.<\/p>\n<p>Yogyakarta certainly lived up to its reputation as the city of <br>\neducation. Three of the six groups from Yogyakarta came from <br>\nMuhammadiyah I high school, two from the Indonesian Islamic <br>\nUniversity and another from Achmad Dahlan University.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;The other two groups (in the final eight) came from the Al <br>\nAmin Islamic boarding school in Madura, East Java, and Bandung <br>\nIslamic University,&quot; said jury member Teguh Imam Subarkah of the <br>\nEnglish Debating Society of the University of Indonesia.<\/p>\n<p>The debate and speech competition, which is being conducted in <br>\nEnglish, is titled Human Rights Public Speaking Competition.<\/p>\n<p>On Friday morning, jury members from Ibnu Khaldun University <br>\nannounced the six finalists in the speech contest, which was <br>\nparticipated in by 45 students. The six were from a number of <br>\ndifferent Islamic boarding schools, including Nurul Hakim in <br>\nKediri, East Java, Al Amien in Madura, East Java, and Cipasung in <br>\nTasikmalaya, West Java.<\/p>\n<p>Teguh said he was surprised by some of the ideas expressed by <br>\nthe students during the speech contest, which took place in <br>\nEnglish.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;They are fluent in expressing their thoughts on the <br>\ncompatibility of Islam with democracy and human rights,&quot; said <br>\nTeguh.<\/p>\n<p>He said most of the students argued that the concept of <br>\ndemocracy had been adopted by the Prophet Muhammad when he was <br>\nalive, as seen in the Constitution of Medina.<\/p>\n<p>The winners will be announced late on Friday night.<\/p>\n<p>The debate and speech competition features Islamic boarding <br>\nschools from around the country and is said to be the first event <br>\nof its kind in the country.<\/p>",
