Makassar evictees

MAKASSAR, South Sulawesi: Some 200 protesters, mostly women
\naccompanied by their children, barred the gates of the municipal
\ncouncil here on Wednesday, to protest their evictions by the city
\nadministration.<\/p>\n
Their move left at least 15 councillors and officials unable
\nto go home, although office hours were over.<\/p>\n
The protesters were all recently evicted -- either from their
\nhomes in the hamlets of Lette and Panambungan, Mariso district,
\nor from their kiosks at Soekarno-Hatta seaport.<\/p>\n
They said the council had ignored their demand for the
\ndismissal of Makassar Mayor Ilham Arif Sirajuddin over the

YOGYAKARTA: Police here on Wednesday accused leather company
\nPT Budi Makmur Jaya Murni of dumping its toxic waste into a pit
\nin Nglengkong, Sleman regency.<\/p>\n
Two trucks carrying 27 drums of toxic waste were seized by the
\nlocal police as evidence.<\/p>\n
Yogyakarta Police chief of detectives Sr. Comr. Dadang Rusli
\npromised to take the case to court.<\/p>\n
The raid involved activists from the Center for Environmental

Donggala eyes gold,

DONGGALA, Central Sulawesi: A senior official has said the
\nDonggala administration will soon cooperate with several
\nuniversities in Central Sulawesi to find out whether gold
\ndeposits exist in Malei subdistrict.<\/p>\n
Donggala mining and energy office head Tawakkal Muhammadong
\nsaid on Tuesday, a survey would be conducted as he had obtained
\npreliminary evidence recently that traces of gold had been
\ndiscovered in soil, in some parts of the subdistrict.<\/p>\n
However, the planned survey soon drew protests from
\nenvironmental activists in the province. Nasution Camang,
\ndirector of the White and Red Foundation, said he would organize
\nmass protests if the administration proceeded with its plan to
