Protected park looted for timber<\/p>\n
BENGKULU, Bengkulu: Ten percent of the protected Kerinci
\nSeblat National Park in Bengkulu had been deforested and used for
\nhorticultural plantations, provincial forestry office head
\nHidayat Syahid said on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
Hidyat said more than 19,000 hectares of the 203,000-hectare
\nforest had been converted to commercial crops in several
\ndistricts across North Bengkulu Regency.<\/p>\n
Other areas involving thousands of hectares of forest had
\nsimply been logged and abandoned, he said.<\/p>\n
\"Besides the destruction in the protected forest, 37,000
\nhectares of Bengkulu's 219,000 hectares of nature reserves have
\nbeen denuded by similar activities.\"<\/p>\n
North Bengkulu Regent Muslihan claimed his administration was
\nstriving hard to deal with squatters in the forest, including by
\nconducting raids.<\/p>\n
Based on data from the Bengkulu provincial administration in
\n1998, the regency had around 920,000 hectares of forest areas, 76
\npercent of which constituted protected and conservation forests.
\nThe remainder comprised limited and fixed production forests.
