Former official gets 8 months for drugs<\/p>\n
BANJARMASIN, South Kalimantan: A district court here sentenced
\na former subdistrict head on Wednesday to eight mounts in jail
\nand fined him Rp 2 million for his involvement in a drug case.<\/p>\n
Usamah, 47, the former Upau subdistrict head in Tabalong
\nregency, was proven guilty of illegally possessing, storing or
\ncarrying shabu-shabu (crystal metamphetamine), presiding judge
\nMohammad Djuhani told the court.<\/p>\n
Prosecutors had demanded that the defendant be jailed for one
\nyear and fined Rp 3 million.<\/p>\n
The panel of judges at Banjarmasin District Court said Usamah
\nwould have to serve his sentence under house arrest, as he
\nsuffered from heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure.<\/p>\n
The court said the defendant's crime offended the people and
\nas a former state official, he had undermined the government's
\nefforts to fight illegal drugs.<\/p>\n
Hearing his sentence, Usamah, who was accompanied by his
\nlawyer, said he was considering whether to appeal the verdict. --

Gun maker arrested in Bojonegoro<\/p>\n
BOJONEGORO, East Java: Police here said on Wednesday they had
\narrested Suwarto, 45, for allegedly making firearms to sell.<\/p>\n
The suspect, a resident of Meduri village in Bojonegoro
\nregency, East Java, was arrested on Tuesday night after police
\nquestioned one of his buyers, local police chief Adj. Sr. Comr.
\nCoki Manurung said.<\/p>\n
He said the arrest of the buyer, identified as Sukimin, a
\nresident of Blimbinggede village, Ngraho subdistrict, was made
\nfollowing a tipoff from local community members.<\/p>\n
"After gathering the information, police detectives later
\nraided the home of Sukimin, where they discovered a gun and three
\nbullets," Coki added.<\/p>\n
He said Sukimin confessed to buying the homemade gun from
\nSuwarto.<\/p>\n
During a raid on Suwarto's home, Coki said, the police found a
\nfirearm and several bullets, as well as other material evidence.<\/p>\n
However, it was unclear whether the case was linked to

MAGETAN, East Java: The public relations head for Magetan
