Govt should encourage
\nEnglish fluency: Seminar<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: A one-day seminar recommended on Wednesday that the
\ngovernment declare English a second language in an effort to
\nencourage fluency in English among Indonesians.<\/p>\n
The seminar, organized by PT Offistarindo Adhiprima, said the
\ngovernment should take such a step because Indonesians trailed
\nfar behind Malaysians, Singaporeans and Filipinos in spoken
\nEnglish abilities.<\/p>\n
Legislator Taufikurrahman Saleh, who chairs the House of
\nRepresentatives commission for educational affairs, opened the
\nevent, and speakers included Donald B. Gibb of the U.S.-based
\nRosetta Stone Software Inc. and Duque Hong of Hong Kong-based

Sampoerna vows to fund

JAKARTA: The Sampoerna Foundation has pledged to provide
\nscholarships for 6,000 middle school and high school students
\nacross the country over the next three years.<\/p>\n
The foundation's director of operations, Elan Merdy, said in a
\nstatement made available to The Jakarta Post on Thursday that the
\nscholarship program was part of the cigarette maker's commitment
\nto make education accessible to youths, especially those from
\npoor families.<\/p>\n
By the end of 2003, the Sampoerna Foundation had disbursed Rp
\n8.5 billion (US$890,000) to the country's most needy students, a

'TVRI' staffer protests

JAKARTA: An employee of state-run television station TVRI has
\nstaged a hunger strike to protest what he considered unfair
\ntreatment by the firm's top executives.<\/p>\n
Sjamsurridjal Irooth said on Tuesday that although it had been
\na year since the television station changed a from state-owned to
\na limited company, its top executives had not improved the
\nlivelihood of its employees.<\/p>\n
\"Instead, they lead extravagant lives, compared to ordinary
\nstaffers,\" he said.<\/p>\n
He said a regular employee was paid Rp 1.5 million per month,
\na pale comparison to the up to Rp 40 million received by

JAKARTA: The National Police said on Wednesday they had
\ntransported 10 women victims of human trafficking from their
\ntemporary homes in Dumai, Riau, to Jakarta to serve as key
\nwitnesses in their cases.<\/p>\n
The 10 were among the 33 women who arrived on Tuesday in Dumai
\nafter they were repatriated from Kuala Lumpur. At least 108 other
\nIndonesian workers were also deported.<\/p>\n
The majority had faced work-related problems in the
\nneighboring country.<\/p>\n
\"The police will handle the cases of 33 women, while the
\nothers will be dealt with by the Ministry of Manpower and
\nTransmigration,\" said a senior police officer. -- JP<\/p>",
