Police, military vow to clean up Jakarta's streets<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The police and the military pledged to clearing
\ncriminals from the Jakarta greater area before the Asia Pacific
\nEconomic Cooperation (APEC) meeting in Bogor, a scenic town sixty
\nkilometers south of here, in November.<\/p>\n
\"We've to work together and start cleaning up this city and
\nits surrounding areas from bandits, thieves and other kinds of
\nstreet criminals, to assure the security of the APEC meetings,\"
\nCity Police Chief Maj. Gen. Mochammad Hindarto told reporters
\nyesterday.<\/p>\n
He was speaking at a press conference about the latest results
\nof the on-going anti-crime operation, called Operasi Bersih 94
\n(Operation Cleansing), which has involved 16,700 police and
\nmilitary members. Hindarto was flanked by city police and
\nmilitary officials, including spokesman of the two institutions
\nand heads of police and military district headquarters in and
\naround the city.<\/p>\n
The annual meeting of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation
\n(APEC) ministerial forum is scheduled to take place in Bogor,
\nless than one-hour drive from Jakarta.<\/p>\n
A number of heads of government from APEC members, including
\nPresident Bill Clinton of the United States, are expected to
\nattend the leadership meeting.<\/p>\n
APEC members include all ASEAN countries -- Brunei, Indonesia,
\nMalaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand, -- along with
\nthe United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South
\nKorea, China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Papua New Guinea and Mexico.<\/p>\n
\"We, for example, will not only safeguard the area where U.S.
\nPresident Bill Clinton stays or passes by, but the whole Jakarta
\ngreater area as well, whether he will be there or not,\" Hindarto
\ninsisted.<\/p>\n
But most of the meeting participants are expected to stay in
\nfive-star hotels in Jakarta, although all the proceedings will be
\nheld in Bogor.<\/p>\n
Therefore, Hindarto said, \"there will be no reason for us to
\nstop the ongoing integrated anti-crime operation if we want to
\nsee the big meetings succeed or run smoothly.\"<\/p>\n
Results<\/p>\n
Since the crime crackdown kicked off 18 days ago, on April 11,
\nthe authorities have captured 729 people for various offenses and
\nseized eight guns, 266 sharp weapons of various models, 233,887
\nbottles of alcoholic drinks and 3.7 million pills and tablets
\nrepresenting the wide ranging illegal drug family.<\/p>\n
Of the total suspects, 460 are believed to have committed
\ncrimes or have had weapons in their possession and the remaining
\n269 are believed to have been drunk.<\/p>\n
\"Most of the suspects were in their 20s and were found drunk,\"
\nHindarto said, adding that the police will release the suspects
\nwho are in police detentions in the Jakarta greater area once
\nthey promise not to disturb society.<\/p>\n
Hindarto insisted that the ongoing Operation Cleansing, which
\nwas initially sponsored by the Jakarta Military Command, has
\nignored no judicial procedures.<\/p>\n
\"According to law, we are on the right track. All of the
\nsuspects captured in the operation along with the material
\nevidence are being handled by the police ,\" he said, adding that
\nsome of their dossiers would soon be handed over to the
\nprosecutors' office.<\/p>\n
Asked whether the shootings of at least five suspects in
\npolice custody was also part of the authorities' harsh operation,
\nHindarto said:<\/p>\n
\"There's no (shoot-on-sight) order but all police members know
\nhow and when to use their guns.\"<\/p>\n
He urged reporters not to blow up news about the five
\nshootings and hoped that his department's methods will send the
\ncorrect message to other suspected criminals. (bsr)<\/p>",
