        "content": "<p>JP\/3\/ISLAND<\/p>\n<p>Developers asked to employ islanders<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): Tourism businesses in the Seribu Islands, <br>\nlocated north of Jakarta Bay, should employ islanders in their <br>\ngrowing tourism industries to help eradicate poverty among the <br>\nlocal residents, a city councilor stated on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>\"Businessmen promoting their islands as tourist resorts should <br>\nnot close their eyes to the poverty of the islanders,\" said <br>\ncouncilor Soegijo during a visit to the islands.<\/p>\n<p>Soegijo criticized the industry for preferring to employ <br>\nnewcomers rather than native people, \"The developers recruit <br>\nislanders merely for manual work.\"<\/p>\n<p>His suggestion was backed up by another councilor, who said <br>\nthat the natives could do much better than just being servants or <br>\nblue collar workers.<\/p>\n<p>Syarifuddin Siregar Pahu pointed out that the managements of <br>\nhotels throughout the Seribu Islands could employ islanders for <br>\ntheir expertise at sea as well as their ability to produce <br>\nimpressive handicrafts.<\/p>\n<p>Siregar noted that the island's owners tend to neglect the <br>\nhuman resources development of their local employees.<\/p>\n<p>\"They could send their local workers to be trained at other <br>\nplaces at the cost of the company,\" he said.<\/p>\n<p>Antara reported that of some 15,000 local residents, who live <br>\nin a number of poor villages scattered throughout the islands, <br>\nonly 368 work in the tourism industries while around one thousand <br>\nothers are newcomers.<\/p>\n<p>Confirming the councilors' statements, some local people <br>\ncomplained that it is quite difficult to take part in the <br>\nbusiness growing right in front of their eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Seribu Islands are one of the most popular tourist <br>\ndestinations here, yet out of its 105 isles only 37 are permitted <br>\nto be exploited.<\/p>\n<p>A North Jakarta government official, however, noted that <br>\ncurrently only 35 islands are being used as tourism places.<\/p>\n<p>Since 1992 some 55,000 Jakartans visit the islands annually.<\/p>",
