City Council demands hotel preservation<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The City Council has asked the Jakarta
\nadministration not to sell the state-owned Graha Wisata Mahasiswa
\nbuilding in Kuningan, South Jakarta.<\/p>\n
\"Although it is deserted and looks dreary compared to other
\nbuildings in the neighborhood, it should be maintained,\" said
\nvice-chairman Fatommy Assary who visited the building on
\nThursday.<\/p>\n
According to Fatommy, the municipality should renovate the
\nbuilding and make a managerial adjustment.<\/p>\n
Graha Wisata Mahasiswa, literally the house of visiting
\nstudents, was built in 1976 to be a hostel for both local and
\nforeign students touring Jakarta. It has currently 58 rooms with
\n244 beds.<\/p>\n
Councilor Romulus Sihombing, however, blasted the management
\nfor failing to keep the building clean, saying that the Jakarta
\nadministration has subsidized the management of the building for
\nyears.<\/p>\n
Romulus noted that the management should run the hostel
\nprofessionally just like the private-run hotels in the area, even
\nthough it functions only for social purposes.<\/p>\n
He said that mismanagement has made the building's appearance
\nawful.<\/p>\n
Ms. Zulfia Sanusi, the manager of the building said that the
\nmanagement paid Rp 176 million (about US$818,000) to the Jakarta
\nadministration in 1993\/1994 fiscal year.<\/p>\n
Zulfia noted that the amount had increased by 80 percent from
\nlast year's earnings and that the maintenance of the building
\nwould improve soon.<\/p>\n
According to her, in 1993 some 4,000 youngsters and 5,000
\nguests stayed the night in the hostel. (09)<\/p>",
