        "content": "<p>JP\/3\/FOCUS<\/p>\n<p>Twilite Orchestra to perform at JHCC<\/p>\n<p>The Twilite Orchestra will present its third concert at the <br>\nJakarta Hilton Convention Center on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>Oddie Agam, the group&apos;s production director, said as quoted by <br>\nAntara over the weekend that the third Twilight Orchestra Gala <br>\nConcert, which is estimated to cost over Rp 350 million <br>\n(US$162,900), will not be sponsored.<\/p>\n<p>Oddie is optimistic that at least 75 percent of the 4,500-<br>\ncapacity convention center will be filled.<\/p>\n<p>The group&apos;s first concert at the Puri Agung Hall of the Sahid <br>\nJaya hotel recorded a loss of Rp 160 million ($74,450), while  <br>\nthe second one, also held at the Sahid Jaya, gained a Rp 60 <br>\nmillion ($27,900) profit.<\/p>\n<p>Members of the group to perform in the next concert will <br>\nconsist of 60 members of the Bandung-based Parahyangan University <br>\nchoir, 40 members of the Anak Indonesia choir and 20 dancers. <br>\n(bsr)<\/p>\n<p>Orphans visit ice show<\/p>\n<p>Around 120 orphans from the Vincentius orphanage in Kramat <br>\nRaya, Central Jakarta, and 80 youths from the Tegal Alur slum <br>\narea, West Jakarta, were able to see the China ice show at <br>\nSenayan on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>The group was led by Mrs. Surjadi, the wife of Jakarta <br>\nGovernor Surjadi Soedirdja.<\/p>\n<p>The visit was jointly sponsored by the Organization of the <br>\nWives of Civil Servants working for the municipal administration <br>\nand the Profession Club, a private club of people from various <br>\nprofessions.<\/p>\n<p>H.A. Munir, spokesman for the municipality, said the two <br>\norganizations also plan to take orphans and other youths from <br>\nother orphanages and slum areas in the city to see the show.(jsk)<\/p>\n<p>City councilor dies at 59<\/p>\n<p>City councilor Sjarifuddin Siregar Pahu died yesterday at the <br>\nIslamic hospital in Cempaka Putih, Central Jakarta, due to heart <br>\nfailure.<\/p>\n<p>Pahu is survived by a wife and nine children, including one <br>\nfoster child.<\/p>\n<p>Pahu was deputy chairman of the City Council&apos;s United <br>\nDevelopment Party (PPP) faction and also deputy chairman of the <br>\ncouncil&apos;s Commission E on social welfare, employment, education, <br>\nyouth, sports, religion, culture and health affairs.<\/p>\n<p>Pahu worked with PN Industri Sandang, a state-owned textile <br>\nmanufacturer, prior to becoming city councilor in 1987, the <br>\nposition he retained until his death.<\/p>\n<p>Pahu held a bachelors degree in social community pedagogy from <br>\nthe Pajajaran University, Bandung, West Java.<\/p>\n<p>He was active in the Indonesian Islamic Students in 1956 and <br>\nas a member of Front Pancasila movement in 1965-66, as well as in <br>\na struggle to eliminate the Indonesian Communist Party.<\/p>\n<p>Pahu was also recognized as one of the founders of the United <br>\nIndonesian Youth and Students Action (KAPPI) after the aborted <br>\ncoup in 1965 by the Indonesian Communist Party and was appointed <br>\nsecretary general of the Islamic Charity Coordinating Board, <br>\nwhich in 1968 became the Indonesian Islamic Party. (06)<\/p>\n<p>Residents question sand quarrying<\/p>\n<p>Residents of the Seribu Islands district, a group of islands <br>\nnorth of Jakarta Bay, voiced their concern over illegal, <br>\nuncontrolled sand quarrying on several islands.<\/p>\n<p>These protests arose from concerns following the sinking of <br>\nfour islands through aggressive sand quarrying and coral digging <br>\nactivities in their waters.<\/p>\n<p>H. Hisbullah, the secretary of the district administration, <br>\nappraised the city councilors of the situation. The councilors <br>\nwere visiting the island recently.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;The city administration should tighten procedures in giving <br>\npermits for sand quarrying in order to protect the environment in <br>\nthe Seribu Islands,&quot; said Hisbullah, adding that many residents <br>\nof the islands had long questioned the illegal sand quarrying.<\/p>\n<p>He pointed out that local people and workers, employed by <br>\nowners of the islands, had been quarrying sand and coral reefs <br>\nday and night to get material to be used for construction works.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;In the long run, it will totally destroy the environment <br>\nhere,&quot; Hisbullah said.(09)<\/p>",
