World Bank denies charges on Indonesia military<\/p>\n
WASHINGTON (Reuter): The World Bank defended itself Wednesday
\nagainst charges that it was indirectly financing Indonesia's
\narmed forces.<\/p>\n
\"The Bank does not, directly or indirectly, finance military
\nexpenditure by its borrowing countries,\" the international
\nlending organization said in a statement.<\/p>\n
A pro-democracy research group has called on the Clinton
\nadministration to oppose World Bank loans to Indonesia, charging
\nthey were indirectly financing Indonesia's armed forces.<\/p>\n
The Project on Demilitarization and Democracy charged in a
\nreport that Indonesia was under-reporting its military spending
\nto the Bank. It also said the country's armed forces were deeply
\ninvolved in the economy in ways that violated Bank standards for
\nreceiving loans.<\/p>\n
\"The report ... is merely ideology and factual errors
\nmasquerading as serious research,\" the World Bank said. \"It ...
\ncompletely misrepresents the actual relationship between the
\nWorld Bank and the government of Indonesia.\"<\/p>\n
The Bank said there was no evidence to support the report's
\nclaims that Indonesia under-reports its military expenditures in
\nits talks with the lending organization.<\/p>",
