Follow-up actions to Dayak-Madura reconciliation urged<\/p>\n
PALANGKARAYA, Central Kalimantan (JP): Several local tribal
\nleaders have called on all levels of the government to promptly
\nfollow up results of the newly concluded Dayak people's congress,
\nwhich recommended the settlement of interethnic conflicts that
\noccurred months earlier.<\/p>\n
The four-day Central Kalimantan People's Congress (KRK) ended
\non Thursday night with the unsurprising outcome of allowing
\nMadurese migrants who were born in Kalimantan or who have family
\nties there to resettle in the province after they formally
\napologize for not respecting the local culture.<\/p>\n
The Dayak figures made their appeal in a news conference in
\nthe provincial capital on Friday, attended by former Central
\nKalimantan governors R. Silvanus and W.A. Gara, former deputy
\ngovernor Victor Paing and local veteran independence fighter W.
\nNarang.<\/p>\n
\"The congress has approved a very favorable agreement,
\nparticularly for Madurese migrants who can now return to Central
\nKalimantan under certain conditions, and all levels of the
\nregional administration should immediately take further action to
\nsupport the agreement,\" urged Silvanus.<\/p>\n
Victor asserted the importance of promoting the results of the
\ncongress to prevent a recurrence of the conflict, which left
\nhundreds dead.<\/p>\n
According to Gara, however, the conditions for a Madurese
\nwishing to return to the province as defined by the KRK will not
\njust end there. \"The resolution needs to be disseminated to all
\nDayaks across the country and even the world, which has so far
\ncondemned the Dayak culture,\" he asserted.<\/p>\n
Steering committee chairman H. Usof meanwhile told reporters
\nthat the congress decision had yet to be formulated into a draft
\nregional regulation, pending its debate by the regional
\nlegislature. It would also be circulated to four previously
\nclash-stricken towns.<\/p>\n
Despite the Dayak's acceptance of Madurese returning to the
\nprovince, the process of resettlement \"should take heed of the
\npreparedness of local inhabitants and all technical matters will
\nbe left to the relevant regencies\", Usof added.<\/p>\n
The congress also decided to declare Feb. 21 Central
\nKalimantan Community Awakening Day, to mark the recapturing of
\nSampit from \"two days of Madurese control\" by the Dayaks in this
\nport town and compatriots in mountainous areas. (32)<\/p>",
