'Smart Library' is ex-minister's long-held dream<\/p>\n

\nAfter retiring as a state official, Malik Fadjar, former
\nreligious affairs minister during President BJ Habibie's
\nadministration and former education minister during the
\nadministration of President Megawati Soekarnoputri, is realizing
\nhis long-cherished dream of owning a good library.<\/p>\n
On Oct.22, his dream came true with the opening of his
\nlibrary, called Rumah Buku Cerdas (Smart Library or RBC). You can
\nfind in this library Malik Fadjar's own collection and books
\ndonated by a number of parties.<\/p>\n
Designed as a one-stop library, RBC has a collection of some
\n500 titles as well as a number of journals and several bundles of
\nmagazines like Tempo, Panji Masyarakat and Horison. The library
\nis also provided with a Wi-Fi Internet hotspot facility.<\/p>\n
\"Anybody wishing to read the books in this library can also go
\nbrowsing on the Internet here,\" said Nazaruddin Malik Fadjar, the
\nson of Malik Fadjar given responsibility for technical matters at
\nthe RBC.<\/p>\n
To make a visitor feel at home in this library, the entrance
\nis free and a coffee shop is provided in one corner. The building
\nis located in a two-story house in Permata Jingga Estate, Jl.
\nPuncak Borobudur, Kav. 12 to 13, Malang.<\/p>\n
\"I have just been told by our friends from Mizan publisher
\nthat they will donate books and they also plan to open their own
\ncounter in RBC,\" said Malik Fadjar when interviewed after
\ninaugurating his library.<\/p>\n
On the first floor of the library are held bundles of
\nmagazines and journals on political, cultural, social and
\nreligious affairs. Apart from its interior decoration, which
\ngives visitors a feeling of relaxation, the library also has its
\nown coffee shop and bakery.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the second floor is designed in a more serious
\nmanner as it keeps neatly arranged collections of rare books,
\nsuch as the address that president Sukarno made in 1954 on the
\nnation and the Islamic state.<\/p>\n
Most of the books kept in this air-conditioned library come
\nfrom Malik Fadjar's private collection, which dates from the
\n1950s.<\/p>\n
\"I have obtained most of the books from book hunting in
\nvarious cities and at Pasar Senen, Jakarta. I hope the library
\nwill open up new avenues for readers in addition to those that
\nalready exist in the community,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Malik denied the allegation that the library was aimed at
\nproviding references for those in search of materials or data for
\nstudying particular disciplines. In fact, he noted, RBC had been
\nset up so that it can establish a synergy with other libraries.<\/p>\n
\"Today, there are a lot of places for such references. This
\nlibrary has been set up so that it can establish a synergy with
\nother libraries,\" he stressed.<\/p>\n
The opening of the library was held jointly with a breaking
\n-of-the-fast dinner, followed later by a joint Ramadhan evening
\nprayer and a Nuzulul Qur'an dialog.<\/p>\n
Present at the ceremony marking the inauguration of RBC were
\nrector of Muhammadiyah University in Malang Drs Muhadjir Effendi,
\ndirector general of tertiary education Soemantri Brodjonegoro and
\nrector of Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University in Jakarta
\nAzyumardi Azra.<\/p>",
