Indonesia's top five fashion designers<\/p>\n
An increasing number of new designers have emerged in Indonesia.
\nFive of them have enjoyed considerable media coverage this year.<\/p>\n

Despite the rapid development of international fashion in
\nIndonesia throughout 2005, five Indonesian designers have
\nsuccessfully displayed consistency and continuity in their
\ncreations. These designers have created a fashion look that is
\nboth clear and capable of interacting with international trends.
\nThe quality of their designs is improving while businesswise they
\ncontinue to develop. Most important of all is the fact that their
\nfantasies are allowed full rein while at the same time their
\npersonal style is retained. Throughout this year, they have
\nappeared in national fashion and lifestyle magazines, and their
\nworks have been featured on many magazine covers and fashion
\npages. In short, they have become the darlings of fashion
\neditors.<\/p>\n
Biyan<\/p>\n
His name is now an icon for Indonesian fashion. He is noted
\nfor his complicated but very neat creations. His designs are
\ngraceful and polite. His main advantage is that he can pile on
\nthe beads onto tissue-paper-thin chiffon. He is also fond of
\ncutting velvet using a biased cut technique. Aside from using his
\nown name as a brand, Biyan also has another line, XSML. Lately,
\nthe XSML brand has become a topic of discussion as it displays a
\nmore youthful character that is full of ardor. It seems Biyan is
\nmore interested in the XSML brand than the Biyan brand owing to
\nthe greater popularity of the former.<\/p>\n
Deden Siswanto<\/p>\n
Deden began his fashion career in Bandung and has been in the
\nnational fashion world less than five years. Within this brief
\nperiod of time, however, he has become a topic of hot discussion
\namong fashionistas. From the very beginning, his designs draw on
\nfolklore, which he has developed into many style directions, such
\nas the urban, extra Bohemian, androgynous, and Victorian, or
\nladylike, styles, and only he knows what will be next. He is fond
\nof manipulating ornamentation, which he places very tactically on
\nhis dresses. He is also bold enough to contrast motifs in an
\nunexpected way, a symbol of his freedom of expression in fashion
\ndesign.<\/p>\n
Denny Wirawan<\/p>\n
From the start of his career, Denny has shown a passion for
\nprocessing and creating motifs to be printed on the fabric. Every
\ntime he launches his annual collection, he astounds us with his
\nnew motifs. This strategy has rendered his designs highly
\nexclusive and gives the impression that no one else is capable of
\ndoing what he does. He applies these motifs to various fabrics:
\nchiffon, denim, raw silk, cotton, leather and so forth. Denny has
\ndeclared that starting this year, the print technique will be his
\nsignature. His boldness in manipulating motifs is balanced by
\ndesigns that always lay the emphasis on a strong ready-to-wear
\nelement.<\/p>\n
Didi Budiardjo<\/p>\n
A highly conceptual designer, Didi is very fond of tinkering
\nwith volume in his creations. As a result, his designs always
\nappear dramatic. He likes blending a rigid silhouette with subtle
\nelements. His designs are super feminine and graceful. Every
\nelement and every detail of his designs carry their own weight
\nand complement each other. Didi also designs for House of Prajudi
\nand through this label he has amply demonstrated his own charm.
\nHe combines futuristic concepts with the demands made by House
\nPrajudi that the designs display a strong Indonesian ethnic
\nelement.<\/p>\n
Sebastian Gunawan<\/p>\n
He is the real star of the Indonesian fashion world today. His
\ndesigns are varied, ranging from simple decorative designs to
\nthe grand and dramatic. As he spent a long time studying at
\nfashion school in Italy, Sebastian's works also display a
\nsexiness reminiscent of Italian women. His evening wear is very
\npopular. However, partnered by his wife, Christina, he also
\nproduces designs using the Votum label, through which he caters
\nfor the ready-to-wear market. Besides being a designer, Sebastian
\nalso often serves as a juror for prestigious fashion competitions
\nin Indonesia.<\/p>",
