Ubud resort blends classical and modern design concepts<\/p>\n
When the Bali-based Arte Architect and Associates was
\ncommissioned to design Puri Wulandari Hotel and Resort in the
\nupscale area of Ubud, the basic concept was to incorporate
\nclassical Balinese architectural elements with modern styles.<\/p>\n
\"We are trying to re-interpret and rework the tradition into
\nthe newest forms of architectural idioms. We respect the
\ntradition while at the same time warmly embrace modernity. It
\n(the design) is of a type that unites the past, present and
\nfuture,\" principal architect Ketut Arthana explained.<\/p>\n
The designs have adopted some of the traditional Balinese
\ncluster or courtyard architecture in the placement of each
\nbuilding consisting of a free-standing lobby, swimming pool or
\ncottages, to resemble traditional Balinese compounds.<\/p>\n
In designing the lobby, the architect adopted the design
\nconcept of Kertagosa water palace in Klungkung, East Bali, an
\noutstanding example of Balinese architecture. Facing the fabulous
\nAyung River, the open-spaced lobby is surrounded by water ponds.<\/p>\n
In general, Balinese architectural concepts are adopted only
\nin terms of ornaments and physical appearance and apply these
\nelements to structures and buildings.<\/p>\n
\"Many architects are not aware of the importance of the
\nspatial concept of Balinese architecture, which allows them to
\nexperiment and to explore more with this concept,\" Arthana added.<\/p>\n
In this project (Puri Wulandari Hotel), the designs were
\nemphasized to maximize \"space management,\" and to create a
\nparticular atmosphere of \"Balinese-ness,\" by only applying
\nornaments as a complement to the spatial design.<\/p>\n
For this distinctive design, the Indonesian Architects
\nAssociation (IAI) lauded this property with a special
\narchitectural award in the non-residential category.<\/p>\n
The annual IAI awards, made on Batam island last Tuesday, were
\ngiven to honor the best talent in the Indonesian Architectural
\nworld. The awards were presented to architectural firms,
\nindividuals and university students for various categories: non-
\nresidential, public facilities, renovation and preservation of
\nhistorical buildings, etc.<\/p>\n
Amid the flood of overseas architects and architectural firms
\nworking in Indonesia, it was a welcome change for Arthana that
\nlocal architects could still play a significant role in the
\ndevelopment of the country's architecture.<\/p>\n
\"This award is recognition and encouragement for local
\narchitects and architectural firms to work harder and produce
