Journo's family want regent probed<\/p>\n
YOGYAKARTA: The family of slain local journalist Fuad M.
\nSyarifuddin, alias Udin, want the Armed Forces to investigate
\nCol. Sri Roso Sudarmo -- the regent of Bantul -- for his alleged
\ninvolvement in the murder on August 1996.<\/p>\n
In a letter sent to Armed Forces Chief Gen. Feisal Tanjung,
\nUdin's father, Hadi Supadmo, said Regent Sri Roso must be
\nquestioned because Udin died while working as a journalist in the
\nregency.<\/p>\n
\"With full respect for the principle of presumption of
\ninnocence, we demand that the Armed Forces chief probe Sri Roso
\nfor his alleged involvement in the murder. We have strong reasons
\nfor making this plea,\" lawyer Budi Hartono from the Yogyakarta
\nLegal Aid Institute, who represents Udin's father, said
\nyesterday.<\/p>\n
Udin failed to regain consciousness and died in hospital three
\ndays after being bashed by an unidentified man or group of men at
\nhis home in Bantul, some 15 kilometers south of here.<\/p>\n
Many, including the Indonesian Journalists Association (PWI),
\nbelieve that Udin's death had something to do with his critical
\nreporting of alleged corruption in the local administration.<\/p>\n
Last November, Bantul District Court freed Dwi Sumaji who
\npolice suspected of killing Udin. (44)<\/p>",
