Journalists survive boat mishap<\/p>\n
A boat carrying a group of journalists and environmental
\nactivists sank on Tuesday morning at around 11 a.m. after it hit
\ncoral reefs off East Kalimantan.<\/p>\n
The accident took place half an hour after the ship left the
\nDerawan islands port for Sangalaki island in East Kalimantan.<\/p>\n
The journalists -- Tantri Yuliandini of The Jakarta Post,
\nMawar Kusuma of Tempo, Yuni Kartika of Kompas and Sabar Subekti
\nof Suara Pembaruan -- were on the island to join a field trip
\nwith Minister of Fisheries and Maritime Affairs Rokhmin Dahuri
\nand environmental organizations Kehati and Bestari.<\/p>\n
The ship departed from the port at around 10:30 a.m. but half
\nan hour later it hit the reef and sank within 15 minutes.<\/p>\n
The journalists managed to jump onto the reefs before a
\nfishing boat owned by local fisherman Khaerun came by two hours
\nlater and rescued them.<\/p>\n
\"When we jumped onto the reefs, the seawater was already up to
\nour waist but it got higher,\" Tantri said by phone.<\/p>\n
The journalists were all safe along with activists Ali
\nSofiawan and Julia Kalmirah of Kehati and Yuyun Suhardiyono,
\nMarwan and Hani Iriani of Bestari.<\/p>\n
An official with the maritime ministry, Drama, confirmed later
\nin the day that all the passengers were rescued and were in a
\ngood condition.<\/p>\n
He said a fisherman's ship salvaged the ill-fated ship and
\ntook the journalists and activists to Derawan islands.<\/p>\n
