Journalists protest against violence<\/p>\n
MEDAN, North Sumatra: Around 120 reporters from various media
\nbased in the North Sumatra capital of Medan marched to the
\nprovincial legislative council on Monday to protest against
\nviolence committed by members of a youth organization.<\/p>\n
The reporters, under the group title Press Solidarity against
\nViolence, waved scores of banners reading, among other things,
\nUse Rights to Reply Peacefully, not Violently.<\/p>\n
The protest was a reaction against violence committed by
\nmembers of Communication Forum for Children of Retired Armed
\nForces Officers (FKPPI).<\/p>\n
On Saturday some 150 members of the North Sumatra branch of
\nFKPPI ransacked the editorial office of the Waspada daily and
\nattacked a member of the editorial staff, following a report on
\nan attack of the organization chairman.<\/p>\n
The journalists of five different journalist organizations
\nsaid they objected to the violence committed by the youth
\norganization. The journalists also demanded that the police take
\nlegal steps against members of the organization, who were
\ninvolved in the action.<\/p>\n
\"Whatever their reasons, destroying the Waspada editorial
\noffice and beating up one of the editorial members is against the
\nlaw. Violence is being used to terrorize the press,\" said Choking
\nSusilo Sakeh, chairman of the Medan branch of the Alliance of
\nIndependent Journalists (AJI).<\/p>\n
Chairman of Commission V of the legislature Hanif Ray who
\nreceived the protesting journalists said that such action by the
\norganization could not be condoned. (39\/sur)<\/p>",
