Journalists plan to sue over beating<\/p>\n
YOGYAKARTA (JP): The local chapter of the Association of
\nIndonesian Journalists is threatening to sue a police officer who
\npunched a female reporter here Wednesday.<\/p>\n
"We are working on taking legal action. We really want to take
\nthe case to court," Masduki Attamimi of the association said
\nyesterday.<\/p>\n
The incident happened when the police officer, Kandyawan,
\nstruck Idayani of Detektif & Romantika on the neck.<\/p>\n
Idayani and dozens of other reporters were trying to interview
\nregent Sri Roso Sudarmo about his bid to continue a US$43-million
\nParangtritis Beach resort project which had been shelved by the
\nprovincial government when the incident occurred.<\/p>\n
When Sri Roso, who is implicated in last year's murder of a
\nBernas journalist, came out of a post-Idul Fitri gathering with
\nGovernor Sri Paku Alam VIII the scrum of journalists approached
\nhim for comments.<\/p>\n
About a dozen of the regent's guards forcibly warded off the
\njournalists and hurled abuse at them. They accused the reporters
\nof staging an anti-Sri Roso demonstration.<\/p>\n
"I know you are trying to demonstrate," Kandyawan, who headed
\nthe regent's police squad, angrily shouted at the journalists.<\/p>\n
"Who is going to stage a demonstration?" retorted an irritated
\nreporter. "We are here on duty, not to demonstrate"<\/p>\n
"You are all disturbing order. I am not afraid of being
\ntelevised on TV" Kandyawan said when a Televisi Pendidikan
\nIndonesia cameraman recorded the incident.<\/p>\n
The Parangtritis megaproject was canceled after Sultan
\nHemengku Buwono X of Yogyakarta joined the public chorus of
\nobjections based on environmental and cultural considerations.
