Journalists boycott Attorney General<\/p>\n
MAKASSAR, South Sulawesi: Local journalists have instituted a
\nboycott against covering the activities of Attorney General Abdul
\nRahman Saleh, who visited the provincial capital on Saturday,
\nfollowing a dispute over coverage code.<\/p>\n
The boycott followed a decision by the provincial prosecutor's
\noffice to declare a meeting between Abdul Rahman and local
\nprosecutors closed to the media.<\/p>\n
Arifuddin, who works for a television station, said the action
\nto close the meeting was reminiscent of Soeharto's New Order
\ndictatorship, that despised transparency. He said that
\njournalists had waited for Abdul Rahman for six hours to ask him
\nquestions about the anticorruption drive in the province.<\/p>\n
Adding to their anger, the provincial prosecutor's office also
\nprevented journalists from covering a meeting between Abdul
\nRahman and a group of student protesters.<\/p>\n
The Attorney General was involved in a heated argument with
\nHouse of Representatives members recently after one of the
\nlawmakers described him \"a preacher in a village of thieves\". --
