        "content": "<p>Journalists<\/p>\n<p>From Media Indonesia<\/p>\n<p>Journalists have lately become objects of torture by<br>\nirresponsible persons. After Sukma (Jakarta), Udin (Yogyakarta)<br>\nand Djaffar (Saudi Arabia), it was Gaudensius Mau's turn to be<br>\nseriously tortured in Dili. It seems to me the journalistic<br>\nprofession is full of risks nowadays.<\/p>\n<p>It is true that all professions are not without risks.<br>\nTraders, bankers or doctors, for example, have to be prepared for<br>\nall sorts of violence that may befall them. The more so for<br>\njournalists, especially as the general election is only months<br>\naway. Reporters should take extra care in presenting news, keep a<br>\nneutral attitude and stick to objective reporting. Even being<br>\nobjective can bring about charges that a reporter has undermined<br>\na certain party that is in conflict with the other side.<\/p>\n<p>There is a need for the journalists to present a balanced<br>\nreport. It is often the case that a reporter tends to quote the<br>\ngovernment official's statement only whenever a dispute exists<br>\nbetween members of the society and the government. This is not<br>\nfair, as far as I am concerned. Both sides should be equally<br>\nrepresented in the news.<\/p>\n<p>The Indonesian Journalists Association should place greater<br>\nstress on the professionalism of its members, and not merely<br>\nsupport the government's actions against organizations under its<br>\nbanner.<\/p>\n<p>IAN KOSWARA<\/p>\n<p>Bandung, West Java<\/p>",
