Journalism of peace?<\/p>\n

The polemic about the broadcasting bill had not slackened when
\nthe mass media raised the issue of "journalism of peace" for
\nconflict areas in the country. There is no guarantee yet that
\nthis type of journalism will be beneficial to national and
\ninternational communities.<\/p>\n
The question arises as to whether the issue is not opposed to
\nthe state policy guidelines on communications stipulated in 1999,
\nwhich read: "To enhance the role of a free press in line with the
\nquality and welfare of journalists so that they become
\nprofessional, maintain their integrity and uphold press ethics,
\nthe supremacy of the law and human rights."<\/p>\n
It is also to be questioned whether the issue is connected
\nwith universal press freedom, which underlines "the freedom to
\nseek, receive and disseminate information and ideas by any means
\nof conveyance (print and electronic media) regardless of country
\nborders".<\/p>\n
In restive regions like Aceh, Ambon and Papua, it is difficult
\nfor the press to present reports and articles only with
\n"peaceful" content for the belligerents concerned. Is balanced
\ninformation meant to create a, appeasing atmosphere for the
\npeople affected by conflicts?<\/p>\n
What about the role of the press to give a voice to people in
\nconflict areas, so they can speak to outsiders both at home and
\nabroad? Therefore, ideas about the press should be wisely and
\ncautiously put forward, so they are acceptable to the common
\nsense of readers, listeners and viewers.<\/p>\n
