TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia\u2019s seventh president, Joko \u201cJokowi\u201d\nWidodo, stated that the challenges facing today\u2019s world are increasingly\ncomplex, with conflicts remaining interconnected and transboundary.\nTherefore, he believes the international community must build a new\nUnited Nations 2.0.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs we need a stronger global institution, stronger global mediation\nand stronger global diplomacy to keep peace, now we must move beyond the\nold edition of the UN and build a new edition, the new UN 2.0,\u201d Jokowi\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Joko Widodo made these remarks during his address at the Penang Peace\nDialogue held in Penang, Malaysia, on Sunday.<\/p>\n
He noted that the challenges facing the global community are growing\never more complex. Conflicts are interconnected, and their impacts\ntranscend national borders.<\/p>\n
Therefore, he added, the UN must reform and redefine its systems,\nprocesses, and strategies to operate more effectively, foster a better\nworld, and remain relevant.<\/p>\n
\u201cBecause sustainable prosperity can only be achieved when every\nnation chooses peace over conflict. Cooperation over competition, and\ncollaboration over division,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n
Jokowi emphasized that no country can succeed alone, no nation can\nprosper amid conflict, and no peace can be forged without trust. He also\nnoted that Southeast Asia has evolved beyond a diverse region into a\nliving model of how civilizations can coexist, learn from one another,\nand grow together.<\/p>\n
In many ways, Jokowi stated, Southeast Asia serves as a crucial\nblueprint for inter-civilizational collaboration in a multipolar world.\n\u201cHere in Southeast Asia, differences are not barriers; differences are\nbridges to understanding, cooperation, and shared progress,\u201d he\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Therefore, he urged that these same core values should also guide\ndeveloped nations.<\/p>\n
Jokowi reminded attendees that the greatness of an advanced nation is\nmeasured not merely by technological prowess, economic strength, or\npolitical clout, but by its responsibility, wisdom, and capacity to\nfoster peace, stability, and shared prosperity.<\/p>\n
\u201cDeveloped countries must not focus solely on their own interests;\nthey must shoulder greater responsibility to build trust, strengthen\ncooperation, and help create a more peaceful world,\u201d Jokowi said.<\/p>\n
The Penang Peace Dialogue was convened to address critical issues\nsurrounding global peace. The event was also attended by Penang Chief\nMinister Chow Kon Yeow and his delegation at a gala dinner on Saturday\nevening, September 5. Indonesian Consul General Wanton Saragih, his\ndiplomatic staff, local community leaders, and various international\nfigures and media representatives were also in attendance.<\/p>\n
