Joint water management in Greater Jakarta needed<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Vice Governor for People's Welfare Affairs of
\nWest Java Dedem Ruchlia, emphasized on Saturday the importance of
\nestablishing a joint tap water management facility in Greater
\nJakarta to help improve services.<\/p>\n
Speaking on behalf of West Jakarta Governor R. Nuriana at a
\nmeeting of the Jabotabek Cooperation Board in Bandung, Ruchlia
\ntold Antara joint management was needed to solve a range of
\nproblems. High levels of tap water leakage, limited investment
\nfunds and a sharp drop in water supplies from reservoirs and
\nlakes were just some of the challenges to be met, he said.<\/p>\n
No details were available on the mechanism for the
\nestablishment of the join management system.<\/p>\n
In addition to the capital, Jabotabek also covers Bekasi,
\nBogor and Tangerang, which are formally under the jurisdiction of
\nthe West Java provincial administration.<\/p>\n
Governor Sutiyoso, who led the Jakarta delegation at the
\nmeeting, said the first phase of improving the system would
\ninclude rehabilitation of damaged water reservoirs and lakes,
\nincreased establishment of household waste water wells and the
\nexpansion of green areas.<\/p>\n
Sutiyoso said up to 70 percent of water demand in Jakarta was
\nstill supplied by ground water sources.<\/p>\n
\"This condition is caused by the fact that tap water from
\ncity-owned water company PDAM Jaya is still below target in both
