        "content": "<p>Joint venture to ease paperwork at port<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): An electronic data interchange (EDI) will<br>\nimprove the system of export and import documentation at Tanjung<br>\nPriok seaport here, an executive says.<\/p>\n<p>Arief A. Soedjono, the manager for finance and administration<br>\nof PT Sisindosat Lintasbuana, an information technology company,<br>\nsaid yesterday that the facility will be provided by a joint<br>\nventure between his company and PT Pelabuhan Indonesia II, the<br>\nstate-owned company assigned to manage a number of seaports<br>\nincluding Tanjung Priok.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;The two companies will finalize negotiations on the<br>\nestablishment of the joint venture in the near future,&quot; he said.<\/p>\n<p>He said Sisindosat will control a maximum stake of 49 percent<br>\nin the planned joint venture.<\/p>\n<p>Companies other than Pelabuhan Indonesia II will be welcome to<br>\nparticipate in the venture, he said.<\/p>\n<p>Arief said the joint venture will ease the paperwork at the<br>\nport, thereby helping to smoothen the flow of goods.<\/p>\n<p>Sisindosat is jointly owned by the cooperative of Indosat, the<br>\nstate-owned international telecommunications company, and by the<br>\nfoundation of Indosat employees.<\/p>\n<p>Fiber optic<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, an executive of Indosat said yesterday that the<br>\ncompany will operate a US$700 million underwater fiber-optics<br>\ncommunication cable system, called Seamewe 2, later this month.<\/p>\n<p>The system, stretching 18,190 kilometers and linking 13<br>\nnations in Southeast Asia, the Middle East and western Europe,<br>\nhas a capacity of 565 megabytes per second per fiber pair.<\/p>\n<p>The project, which has six submarine cable segments and one<br>\nland segment, is owned by 40 international parties, including<br>\nIndosat and its subsidiary PT Satelindo.<\/p>\n<p>The executive also said that Indosat signed an agreement in<br>\nKuala Lumpur last Friday to establish another 12,000-kilometer<br>\nsubmarine fiber-optic cable network connecting Japan, South<br>\nKorea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, the Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore,<br>\nThailand and Indonesia.<\/p>\n<p>The $524 million project will be able to handle 786,240<br>\ntelephone calls simultaneously and can be connected to another<br>\nfiber-optic cable built by Australia.<\/p>\n<p>Construction of the project will begin next year and will be<br>\ncompleted in Nov. 1996.
