        "content": "<p>Joint efforts help curb malaria<\/p>\n<p>KULONPROGO, Yogyakara: Joint efforts involving the regencies<br>\nof Kulonprogo in Yogyakarta and neighboring Purworejo in Central<br>\nJava have significantly reduced the number of malaria cases in<br>\nthe Menoreh highlands, which separate the two regencies,<br>\nofficials said.<\/p>\n<p>Purworejo Health Office director Muhammad Sururi said over the<br>\nweekend the number of malaria cases in his jurisdiction had<br>\ndropped significantly to 14,860 cases in 2002 from<br>\n22,862 in 2001.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at the launch of a public awareness campaign on the<br>\ndangers of malaria in the Kulonprogo village of Jatimulyo, Sururi<br>\nsaid he had recorded less than 100 cases of malaria as of<br>\nFebruary this year.<\/p>\n<p>Some 25 villages in the four Purworejo subdistricts of<br>\nBagelen, Kaligesing, Lowanu and Bener in the Menoreh highlands<br>\nare considered as malaria-prone regions. They border on the<br>\nKulonprogo subdistricts of Girimulyo, Kalibawang, Samigaluh and<br>\nKokap, which are also considered vulnerable to the disease.<\/p>\n<p>Kulonprogo Health Office director Sugiarto also revealed a<br>\nsharp decline in the number of malaria cases in his jurisdiction<br>\nto 27,000 in 2002 from 37,000 in 2001.<\/p>\n<p>Both Sururi and Sugiarto attributed the decline in the<br>\nincidence of malaria to coordination and cooperation involving<br>\nall elements in the community as part of a comprehensive and<br>\nintegrated movement to deal with malaria. -- JP<\/p>",
