Joint efforts help curb malaria<\/p>\n
KULONPROGO, Yogyakara: Joint efforts involving the regencies
\nof Kulonprogo in Yogyakarta and neighboring Purworejo in Central
\nJava have significantly reduced the number of malaria cases in
\nthe Menoreh highlands, which separate the two regencies,
\nofficials said.<\/p>\n
Purworejo Health Office director Muhammad Sururi said over the
\nweekend the number of malaria cases in his jurisdiction had
\ndropped significantly to 14,860 cases in 2002 from
\n22,862 in 2001.<\/p>\n
Speaking at the launch of a public awareness campaign on the
\ndangers of malaria in the Kulonprogo village of Jatimulyo, Sururi
\nsaid he had recorded less than 100 cases of malaria as of
\nFebruary this year.<\/p>\n
Some 25 villages in the four Purworejo subdistricts of
\nBagelen, Kaligesing, Lowanu and Bener in the Menoreh highlands
\nare considered as malaria-prone regions. They border on the
\nKulonprogo subdistricts of Girimulyo, Kalibawang, Samigaluh and
\nKokap, which are also considered vulnerable to the disease.<\/p>\n
Kulonprogo Health Office director Sugiarto also revealed a
\nsharp decline in the number of malaria cases in his jurisdiction
\nto 27,000 in 2002 from 37,000 in 2001.<\/p>\n
Both Sururi and Sugiarto attributed the decline in the
\nincidence of malaria to coordination and cooperation involving
\nall elements in the community as part of a comprehensive and
\nintegrated movement to deal with malaria. -- JP<\/p>",
