Joint bomb probe team to be set up<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas
\nHam) resolved on Tuesday to establish a joint fact-finding team
\nto identify culprits behind the Christmas Eve bomb explosions,
\nwhich claimed 18 lives and injured dozens of others.<\/p>\n
The commission's chairman, Djoko Soegianto, said the
\norganization would soon ask President Abdurrahman Wahid to issue
\na presidential decree endorsing the establishment of the joint
\nteam, which will include representatives from the government, the
\ncommission and the general community, including members of the
\nIndonesian Forum for Peace (FID).<\/p>\n
FID is a voluntary council set up by political, legal and
\nsocial activists soon after the incidents, in an effort to assist
\nthe government identify the mastermind behind the bombings, which
\noccurred at churches in seven provinces.<\/p>\n
Djoko said the government had not yet responded to the
\ninitiative, which would involve the government-sanctioned
\ninvestigation team, led by National Police chief Gen. Surojo
\nBimantoro, and FID.<\/p>\n
\"Such a joint investigation team is needed to effectively and
\ncredibly reveal the truth behind the incidents,\" he told a media
\nconference following the commission's plenary meeting on Tuesday
\nafternoon.<\/p>\n
\"The criminal aspects of the case will be handled by the
\npolice, while the commission will handle the human rights issues
\nonce we uncover the motive behind these (bombing incidents),\"
\nDjoko added.<\/p>\n
He said the commission discovered that people still doubted
\nthe police's seriousness in handling such bombing cases, an
\nattitude inherited as a result of similar incidents in the past
\nwhich still remain unsolved.<\/p>\n
The people demand that the perpetrators be prosecuted and
\nseveral institutions, including the intelligence agencies, be
\nrestructured so that such incidents will not happen again in the
\nfuture, Djoko said.<\/p>\n
In a separate development, a hand grenade was found planted in
\nfront of a rental tour bus company, PT Bunga Tanjung, on Jl.
\nTeuku Umar on Batam island, Riau, in the early hours of Tuesday.<\/p>\n
A correspondent for a Jakarta-based daily said that he
\nwitnessed Barelang police patrolling the area take the grenade
\nand two pedestrians who discovered the grenade to police
\nheadquarters. An employee of PT Bunga Tanjung also confirmed the
\nincident.<\/p>\n
Barelang police detectives chief Adj. Comr. Bahagia Dachi,
\nhowever, denied the incident.<\/p>\n
\"It (the finding of the grenade) is a rumor. Nothing has
