        "content": "<p>Job training program in Japan pays off<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): The industrial apprenticeship program for young<br>\nIndonesians in Japan is paying dividends, not only for Indonesia<br>\nbut also for the Japanese companies, it was disclosed yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>Minister of Manpower Abdul Latief yesterday met with 124<br>\nIndonesians, who recently returned from Japan after completing<br>\ntheir two-year apprenticeships, at his office to review the<br>\nprogram.<\/p>\n<p>Latief said the apprentices studied the Japanese corporate<br>\nculture, one of the key elements behind the Japanese industrial<br>\nsuccess story.<\/p>\n<p>This is in addition to learning and developing skills in their<br>\nrespective areas of expertise, he pointed out.<\/p>\n<p>But more than that, the government was encouraged by the<br>\npositive response from the Japanese companies which provided the<br>\nindustrial training program, Director General for Training and<br>\nProductivity Affairs Andi M. Sangaji, who was present at the<br>\nmeeting, said.<\/p>\n<p>The Japanese companies have asked for more Indonesian<br>\ntrainees, Sangaji said.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;This program will continue because it is bringing numerous<br>\nadvantages both to the apprentices and the Japanese companies,&quot;<br>\nLatief said.<\/p>\n<p>The apprenticeship program was launched two years ago, jointly<br>\nsponsored by the ministry and the Japanese Association for<br>\nInternational Manpower Development of Small- and Medium-scale<br>\nCompanies.<\/p>\n<p>Some 2,000 Indonesians, selected from high schools and<br>\ntechnical high schools, were sent to take part in the program.<br>\nBefore leaving for Japan, they were given a three-month<br>\nintensive course of the Japanese language.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;The apprentices should share their experiences and knowledge<br>\nwith fellow workers when they begin working in Indonesia,&quot; Latief<br>\nsaid. &quot;They should show the working ethos and discipline that<br>\nthey have learned in Japan.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>One of the returning apprentices, Marwan, 23, said he learned<br>\na lot from the program.<\/p>\n<p>Marwan, who was employed at a pipe manufacturing company in<br>\nOsaka, said he plans to open a pipe system service in his home<br>\ntown in Palembang, South Sumatra.<\/p>\n<p>He said he managed to save Rp 20 million from bonuses and<br>\nwages he received during his training in Japan. &quot;The money will<br>\nbe enough for the first capital outlay.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Besides receiving three-month bonuses and monthly payments,<br>\nthe apprentices were given certificates in recognition of their<br>\nskill at the end of the program.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;With the certificate, I can also seek work with Japanese<br>\ncompanies in Indonesia,&quot; Marwan said.
