Job opportunities web site launched<\/p>\n

As part of its efforts to reduce unemployment, the government
\nintroduced on Wednesday a national website offering information
\nabout job vacancies and a nationwide job-seeker database.<\/p>\n
Officially launched by President Megawati Soekarnoputri,
\nwww.infokerja.web.id provides information about vacancies in
\ncompanies and factories owned by both the government and the
\nprivate sector.<\/p>\n
With the website, the government also wants to facilitate the
\nrecruitment process for both companies and jobseekers.<\/p>\n
\"We hope this will be a breakthrough and hope that each
\nprovince will have its own website for job opportunities in the
\nnext few months,\" Minister of Manpower and Transmigration Jacob
\nNuwa Wea said after the launch.<\/p>\n
He said the online service would simplify the recruitment
\nprocess as people could apply online.<\/p>\n
Reducing the unemployment rate is one of the major problems
\nthe country faces as it struggles to fully recover from the
\neconomic crisis that has been beleaguering the country since
\n1997.<\/p>\n
According to Central Statistics Agency (BPS) head Soedarti
\nSurbakti, the number of unemployed in Indonesia is around nine
\nmillion people.<\/p>\n
\"This is the number of jobseekers and those who work fewer
\nthan three hours per day,\" said Soedarti, adding that Indonesia
\nhad 100 million people of productive age.<\/p>\n
However, she said, there were different perceptions about the
\ndefinition of unemployment. Some considered those who work less
\nthan 36 hours a week as jobless.<\/p>\n
\"For us, we say that those working in the formal sector have
\n42 working hours per week, so those working in the informal
\nsector could be more or less than that number,\" Soedarti said.<\/p>\n
Jacob insisted, however, that the number of unemployed people
\nwas not as high as BPS had disclosed due to differing definitions
\nof joblessness.<\/p>\n
\"I do not believe in the figure that BPS disclosed; I think it
\nis less than that,\" the minister said without revealing his
\nestimate.<\/p>\n
The ministry has also worked together with several
\norganizations to open up more websites for job opportunities.<\/p>\n
With the Indonesia Accountants Foundation (YAI), the ministry
\nlaunched www.yai.ac.id, while the Karawang municipality operates
\nwww.disnakerkarawang.go.id, which provides information about job
\nopportunities in the area.<\/p>\n
\"We hope that more municipalities will follow Karawang's
\nexample in providing a website service,\" Jacob added.<\/p>",
