Former Vice President Jusuf Kalla has expressed concern over an\nattack on human rights activist Andrie Yunus. The activist from the\nCommission for the Disappeared and Victims of Violence (Kontras) was\nassaulted with caustic acid by unknown assailants.<\/p>\n
Kalla stated that such an attack should not occur. \u201cRegarding the\ncaustic acid attack, we are naturally first and foremost concerned and\nregret that this happened,\u201d Kalla said at his residence in Kebayoran\nBaru, South Jakarta on Saturday, 14 March 2026.<\/p>\n
The Chairman of the Indonesian Mosque Council expressed hope that\npolice would investigate the case seriously. He also recalled a similar\nincident that befell former KPK investigator Novel Baswedan in April\n2017.<\/p>\n
According to him, a caustic acid attack is a serious crime. \u201cWith the\nexpectation that police truly investigate the case, because this came\nafter the KPK case, Novel Baswedan back then, now it has happened\nagain,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Kalla stated that police must identify the group carrying out attacks\nusing caustic acid. According to Kalla, police are obliged to\ninvestigate their motives.<\/p>\n
The former Chairman of Golkar Party believed the attack could be\nrelated to the victims\u2019 activities, such as Andrie being a human rights\nactivist and Novel being a KPK investigator at the time. \u201cWe need to\nlook at who was harmed and who acted to commit such attacks,\u201d he\nsaid.<\/p>\n
For now, Kalla said, the motivation and perpetrators of both attacks\nstill need to be determined. \u201cPolice must actively investigate this,\u201d\nsaid the former two-term vice president.<\/p>\n
Andrie Yunus was previously reported to be the victim of a caustic\nacid attack by unknown persons. Andrie was attacked on Jalan Talang,\nCentral Jakarta, on the evening of Thursday, 12 March 2026 at\napproximately 23:37 Western Indonesia Time.<\/p>\n
Based on Kontras\u2019 chronology, Andrie was riding his motorcycle on\nJalan Salemba I - Talang, Central Jakarta, when two perpetrators\napproached from the opposite direction of Jalan Talang, specifically at\nTalang Bridge, riding a motorcycle believed to be a Honda Beat automatic\nfrom 2016-2021.<\/p>\n
The perpetrators were two men, each serving as driver and passenger.\n\u201cThey had the following characteristics: the first perpetrator was the\nrider wearing a white-blue combination shirt, jeans-like trousers, and a\nblack helmet,\u201d according to Kontras\u2019 statement on Friday, 13 March\n2026.<\/p>\n
The second perpetrator, the rear passenger, wore a black buff-style\nface covering mask that covered half his face. He was wearing a dark\nblue shirt and blue long trousers that were rolled up short and appeared\nto be made of jeans.<\/p>\n
One perpetrator then sprayed caustic acid towards Andrie, hitting\nparts of his body. Andrie immediately screamed in pain and fell from his\nmotorcycle.<\/p>\n
As a result, Andrie sustained serious injuries across his body,\nparticularly on his right and left hands, face, chest, and eyes. Based\non examination results, Kontras found no belongings of the victim\nmissing or taken either during or after the incident.<\/p>\n
Andrie was immediately taken to the nearest hospital in Jakarta and\nreceived emergency medical treatment, particularly on the eye area\naffected by the liquid. From the examination results, Andrie suffered 24\npercent burn injuries.<\/p>\n
The incident occurred shortly after Andrie recorded a podcast at the\nIndonesian Legal Aid Foundation (YLBHI) office in Menteng, Central\nJakarta. The podcast recording titled \u201cRemilitarisation and Judicial\nReview in Indonesia\u201d was completed at approximately 23:00 Western\nIndonesia Time.<\/p>\n
Kontras Coordinator Dimas Bagus Arya stated that this action was an\nattempt to silence critical voices in society, particularly human rights\ndefenders. Dimas said the incident must receive immediate attention from\nvarious parties, including law enforcement agencies and civil\nsociety.<\/p>\n
He also called on police to investigate the incident. \u201cLaw\nenforcement must immediately conduct an investigation to uncover the\nperpetrators and the motive behind the attack,\u201d he said in a written\nstatement.<\/p>\n
