JI-trained bomber nabbed in RP<\/p>\n
PHILIPPINES: A militant believed to have been trained by the
\nJamaah Islamiyah (JI) and suspected of being involved in deadly
\nbombings in the southern Philippines has been arrested in Manila,
\npolice said on Thursday.<\/p>\n
The suspect, who is aged in his early 30s and identified only
\nas Mentang, was captured by intelligence agents in Paco district
\non Wednesday in possession of an unlicensed handgun.<\/p>\n
Officials said initial investigations revealed he may be a
\nmember of the separatist Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF)
\nwhich has been negotiating peace with Manila.<\/p>\n
\"Apparently, he is a member of the breakaway faction of the
\nMILF and he claimed to have been trained by JI elements in
\ncentral Mindanao,\" a police intelligence official said.<\/p>\n
\"He has revealed their group's plan to conduct bombing
\noperations in the southern Philippines,\" the official said
\nwithout elaborating.<\/p>\n
Mentang is suspected of being involved in the bombings of an
\nairport and a wharf in the southern city of Davao last year which
\nkilled 38 people and left more than 100 dead. --AFP<\/p>",
