JI detainees lodge complaint<\/p>\n
MALAYSIA: Suspected members of the Jamaah Islamiyah (JI)
\nterrorist group in Malaysia have accused police of torturing them
\nduring interrogations.<\/p>\n
Thirty-one men, jailed without trial for more than two years
\nunder Malaysia's tough security law, lodged a formal abuse
\ncomplaint with the country's human rights commission.<\/p>\n
Activists who oppose the Internal Security Act (ISA) provided
\nThe Associated Press with a copy of the complaint on Tuesday, on
\ncondition that the names of those who signed it were not
\npublished, for fear of reprisals.<\/p>\n
In the document, the detainees allege that during
\ninterrogations that lasted for weeks after their arrest, police
\nforced them to strip naked during long question-and-answer
\nsessions, and routinely slapped and kicked them.<\/p>\n
Deputy Home Minister Zainal Abidin Zin said he had not seen
\nthe complaint. However, he said police had no reason to force
\ndetainees to confess.<\/p>\n
\"Even if suspects do not cooperate or confess, the police on
\ntheir own assessment, can recommend to have them detained, so
\nthey do not need to torture or harm these people,\" he said. -- AP<\/p>",
