Jayapura to resettle isolated tribes<\/p>\n
JAYAPURA, Papua: The Jayapura regency administration has
\nallocated Rp 3 billion to resettle isolated tribes in the regency
\nduring the 2003 fiscal year.<\/p>\n
Nicolaus Dake, a senior staff member of the local social
\naffairs office, said here on Wednesday that there were dozens of
\ntribes engaged in seminomadic agriculture along the Memberamo
\nriver, which flows through the regency. So far, they had not been
\nresettled because of a lack of funds.<\/p>\n
"This year the government has allocated Rp 3 billion to
\nfinance the erection of modest homes for the tribespeople, who
\nare still living the stone age," he said.<\/p>\n
Nicolaus said his office had conducted a survey of the remote
\nareas where the tribes lived as a preliminary move prior to the
\nconstruction of the houses.<\/p>\n
"In our talks with the tribespeople, they expressed the wish
\nto be resettled and start engaging in intensive agriculture," he
\nsaid, adding that he still had doubts over whether the
\nresettlement program would be successful as the tribespeople were
