Jaya Group joins trend in elite school project<\/p>\n

JAKARTA (JP): The Jaya Group, one of Indonesia's largest
\nbusiness entities, is joining the trend among large-scale
\nbusiness groups to develop elite schools to meet the steadily
\nrising demand for quality education.<\/p>\n
The Lippo Group has established an elite private school,
\nSekolah Pelita Harapan, in Karawaci, Tangerang, and the Al Azhar
\nelite boarding school in Bekasi. The Argo Manunggal Group has
\nbuilt another elite school, St. Laurensia, in Serpong, Tangerang.
\nAnd now the Jaya Group has set up its own quality school, Jaya
\nGlobal School, in Bintaro, Tangerang.<\/p>\n
The Lippo Group, Argo Manunggal Group and Jaya Group are,
\nrespectively, owned by Mochtar Riady, The Ning King and Ciputra,
\nsome of Indonesia's most noted business tycoons.<\/p>\n
Ciputra said at the launching of the Jaya Global School in the
\nmiddle of last month that its establishment constitutes Jaya
\nGroup's commitment to fulfilling parents' wishes for the best
\neducation of international standards for their children.<\/p>\n
\"The main objective of entering the education field is to make
\none of the best schools in the country, both in terms of quality
\nand facilities,\" he said.<\/p>\n
The four schools are built in very modern surroundings with
\nPelita Harapan in the huge, sprawling Lippo Karawaci project, the
\nAl Azhar Boarding School in the huge Lippo City Complex, St.
\nLaurensia in the Alam Sutera housing complex and Jaya Global
\nSchool in the Bintaro Jaya housing complex.<\/p>\n
Pelita Harapan and Al Azhar Boarding School place focus on
\nacademic and sports excellence and on a combination of modern
\ngeneral education with strict Moslem discipline. St. Laurensia
\nemphasizes academic achievement, sports, extracurricular
\nenhancement of horizons and moral qualities based on Catholic
\nvalues. And Jaya Global School emphasizes quality academic
\neducation based on a combination of domestic and international
\ncurricula.<\/p>\n
These elite schools accept students of various levels, ranging
\nfrom kindergarten to high school, except the Al Azhar Boarding
\nSchool, which specializes in high school students.<\/p>\n
These schools are mostly equipped with sophisticated
\nfacilities, ranging from air conditioned classrooms, modern
\nlibraries with books in Indonesian and English, CD Roms and
\ncomputerized catalogs, to sports facilities for basketball,
\nvolleyball, tennis, badminton and football, as well as swimming
\npools.<\/p>\n
Sunaryo, the headmaster of Jaya Global School, told The
\nJakarta Post that in the first stage his school's kindergarten
\nand primary school will open next month, while the junior and
\nsenior high school will open in July, next year.<\/p>\n
Jaya Global is located on Jl. Raya Jombang in the Bintaro Jaya
\nSector IX housing complex in Tangerang, adjacent to the Japanese
\nInternational School, which is currently under construction, and
\nthe British International School.<\/p>\n
\"Starting from kindergarten, the teaching methods applied at
\nthe school will involve students actively in the learning process
\nthrough the use of both the Indonesian and English languages,\" he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Sunaryo explained that the response from the public to the
\nestablishment of the school is very good, as is reflected by the
\nfact that many parents have been asking for information about the
\nschool.<\/p>\n
The school had registered 100 students as of June 9, he said.
\nThe admission fee is Rp 20 million (about US$9,090), and the
\nmonthly tuition fee is Rp 450,000 for the pre-school level, Rp
\n650,000 for kindergarten and Rp 750,000 for elementary school.<\/p>\n
By comparison the admission fee at Al Azhar Boarding School is
\nRp 20 million, with a monthly tuition fee and lodging costs
\ntotaling Rp 850,000.<\/p>\n
Many students registering at the Jaya Global School come from
\nfamilies of mixed parentage, Sunaryo said.<\/p>\n
Stuart Weston, education consultant for the school, said that
\nits professional teaching staff from Indonesia and from English
\nspeaking countries will guide the students to become more
\ncreative and independent.<\/p>\n
\"Each class, which will consist of 24 students at the maximum,
\nwill also have an assistant teacher to help develop the students'
\ntalent and monitor their development,\" he said.<\/p>\n
The teaching methods, which use two-way communication, are
\ndesigned to make the students more active and confident. Many of
\nthe local teachers have a good command of English and have had
\nexperience in international schools, both Sunaryo and Weston
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Sunaryo said that the Jaya Global School will teach the
\nnational curriculum using modern teaching methods, which are
\ndesigned to stimulate students to be more creative and to enable
\nthem to express their own thoughts and opinions in speech and
\nwriting.<\/p>\n
\"The children will be helped to understand theory through
\npractical work, including observation and experiment both inside
\nand outside the class. As a result they are expected to learn by
\ndirect experience, or learning by doing, not merely rote
\nlearning,\" he said.<\/p>",
