        "content": "<p>Javanese opera opens at TIM<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): Thirty groups of wayang orang, or traditional<br>\nJavanese opera, are taking part in the fourth national festival<br>\nthat opened at the Taman Ismail Marzuki on Friday night.<\/p>\n<p>The 15-day festival was opened by Coordinating Minister for<br>\nPolitical Affairs and Security Soesilo Soedarman and was attended<br>\nby numerous senior officials, including Minister of Education and<br>\nCulture Wardiman Djojonegoro and Minister of Tourism, Post and<br>\nTelecommunications Joop Ave.<\/p>\n<p>Chairman of the festival committee Soerparmo said that the<br>\nevent aims at helping preserve the performing art which is highly<br>\npopular, especially in Central Java, Antara reported.<\/p>\n<p>The first and second festival were held in Surakarta, central<br>\nJava, in 1987 and 1991 while the third was in Surabaya in 1993.<\/p>\n<p>The revelry is held in commemoration of the 50th anniversary<br>\nof Indonesia's independence that falls on Aug. 17.<\/p>\n<p>Soesilo Soedarman, who also chairs the Senawangi Foundation<br>\nwhich oversees preservation of the famed Javanese shadow<br>\npuppetry, said the traditional opera will survive the<br>\nglobalization era.
