Javanese and Indonesian<\/p>\n

Kompas said in its Oct. 26 edition that "Javanese language is
\nbeing threatened and replaced by Bahasa Indonesia". I feel
\ndisturbed and want to question the statement. The word
\n"threatened" was not put between quotation marks, giving it a
\nsense of being definite.<\/p>\n
Somebody being threatened will automatically take steps to
\nprotect himself. The steps can be the avoidance of the threat or
\nthe elimination of it.<\/p>\n
In the context of languages, the Javanese language cannot do
\nthe first. The only way to save itself is to confront and
\neliminate the source of the threat. In other words, to eliminate
\nBahasa Indonesia in order for the Javanese language to remain
\nsupreme. Was that meant by the report?<\/p>\n
The report went on to say: "Hasim Gunawan deplores that
\ncurrently, many young Javanese families, mainly in big cities,
\nuse Bahasa Indonesia in communicating with their children."<\/p>\n
The statement is very frightening for its spirit in
\ncontradiction to the efforts to improve on the capabilities of
\nusing Bahasa Indonesia correctly. Whatever reason Hasim Gunawan
\nmay have, I am strongly convinced that he is mistaken if he
\ndeplores the use of Bahasa Indonesia by Indonesian families.<\/p>\n
Since 1928, we have agreed on the use of one united language.
\nWhy is there now somebody who focuses on a regional language,
\ncontrasting it with our national language?<\/p>\n
