Japan's village industry<\/p>\n
In his recent visit to Japan, East Java Governor Basofi
\nSoedirman was impressed by the \"one village, one product\"
\nconcept.<\/p>\n
On returning home he envisaged implementing the concept in his
\nprovince. In our view, analysis of local needs and constraints
\nshould be made before this concept is carried out.<\/p>\n
So far, one village in East Java produces a variety of
\nproducts. Its strength is that if one product does not do well in
\nthe market, other products may. The reverse also seems to be
\ntrue.<\/p>\n
One village, one product certainly requires more
\nprofessionalism. Its weakness is that if the product is not
\nsuccessful in the market, the whole village will suffer.<\/p>\n
So it would seem that diversification of products in a given
\nvillage is still needed. Perhaps a more realistic approach would
\nbe to improve a certain product along with efforts to reduce the
\nnumber of products in a village.<\/p>\n
